One of my first anime. It's a love affair, for me at least.

I would've liked Crash more if the storyline didn't contradict the most important arc in Crisis, but OK.

I believe the original post was it was to premiere at SDCC. I will be in for 1, hopefully more vintage art then modern art. IMO Sonoda's art style has changed for the worse in latter days. Good example of this would be Vintage BGC art, or Gall Force, or Riding Bean.. etc. Then take a look at Cannon God Exaxxon or the latter art in Gunsmith cats. Old Art yes, new art.. Pass.

Is Sonoda just on the outs with the industry writ large? First Bean Bandit doesn’t get any takers in an era where everyone is knocking down the doors for more anime, period, and now he has to go to Udon for an art book.

If it's available outside of the con, I think I might try to pick this up.

Maybe the compilation of this surprise is why so many other Udon projects have been put on the back burner? It'll be 9 years next month since they announced Sugar Sugar Rune, and 3 years since Rose of Versailles episodes was announced (and one month after its most recent publishing date passed). I'm patient, but can't help being curious about what's going on there.

I don't think so. I remember an article here on ANN that mentioned Sonoda-sensei was stepping back from the manga industry after he finished up "Gunsmith Cats" to focus on helping his family with their stationary store. Not to mention the old-school artists are often overlooked in general. Part of it -as Justin Sevakis once explained- comes from master tapes, original art, and more not aging well even in storage, so some things simply can't be touched up or completely remastered. Formatting is a problem too, as I learned to my despair in trying to convert two OVAs to DVD via Legacybox; it's simply not made for fullscreen or widescreen.

There's also stories that simply won't fly today for various reasons, and there can be other unexpected setbacks interfering with "knocking down the doors for more anime" as you said, such as the Go Nagai display museum burning down and destroying every single piece. Nagai-sensei rallied and said he could redraw everything if he had to, but it was still a massive blow, since that sounds like none of it was ever duplicated for safekeeping.

So yeah, there's always several factors to consider here.

For me Masamune Shirow, Kenichi Sonoda, and Johji Manabe are the gods of manga. Sure they are the Golden Age of manga, and there are a lot of newer manga artists, but they are the classic trinity for me.

Gallforce: Eternal Story, Outlanders, and Appleseed were some of my favorite manga and anime from my early days of anime and manga.

As to Bean Bandit, I just don't think he was that popular enough, especially when compared to Gunsmith Cats. If I had to put them both on the scale, Gunsmith Cats would win. Bean Bandit came first, but Rally Vincent conquered.

I just wish that somebody would pick up Johji Manabe's Outlanders, Caravan Kidd, or even Drakuun for an anime series.

Looking forward for the Udon Bubble Crisis Artbook.

Looks like they've added it for pre-order through their site, for those of us not at the event.

Locked my order in earlier today, even though I'm sure Udon will release a normal, non-slipcase edition later, BGC's one of the few series that will instantly make my wallet fly open, every time.
