This comes as no surprise; they haven't had any major projects in almost 10 years.

At least their shows won't sink into licensing hell.

Following Maki's arrest, Anno requested the collaboration of Kadokawa, King Records, and studio TRIGGER to "prevent damage to the reputation" of Evangelion and other works. Representatives from those companies were appointed as board directors at Gainax, and they worked to try to understand the situation and resolve unpaid debts to studios, writers, and creators in the animation industry.

This part fassinates me the most, that despite all of the bad blood many of these people and creators (Anno has never been shy about it) had with Gainax they still wanted to help. This might also explains how and why TRIGGER got the rights to Panty & Stocking back.

I'm more surprised that they were able to last this long when they haven't done much in a while. Thank you for everything Gainax, i enjoyed all your works.

This story is kind of amazing. Hideaki Anno truly loves anime and seems to have worked very hard to help GAINAX. But also helped get the rights of stuff to other companies? So I assume that's why TRIGGER got Panty and Gurren Lagann. Hideaki Anno is literally saving anime

One of the most important and influential studios of all time, who shook up the industry in a way no one has before or since.

But their era seems like it passed some time ago. They haven't produced any actual animation in years, and it seemed like since the start of this decade they've just existed as a holding company for the Evangelion IP. That indie upstart spark they once had is long since gone; it feels like most of that energy went out the door with Trigger's founders.

Someday someone will make one heck of a documentary about this company's rise and fall.

The only real surprise is that it took this long. Gainax hadn't done anything substantial in at least a decade, the company's name was mud for all the reasons mentioned, and anybody who personally had a good reputation left. Those additional loans etc. at least explain how Gainax could continue to exist without producing anything for so long.

I am surprised to see that Anno worked that hard to help them. It would have been a lot easier to preserve the reputation of the IPs by buying them up, probably pretty cheap considering the situation, and leave Gainax to figure out the mess it made for itself. It seems like he hoped that something could be done to keep his old company from disappearing.

Otaku no video clears its throat. (I wonder who got the rights to that IP?)

Probably a good time to revisit that movie.

Yep. The IP rights were transferred to them from Gainax some years ago.

Wasn't it a strange case where Evangelion the TV show+90s movies and Rebuild were taken as separate IPs?
