This show has been absolutely delightful and yes, Buchio is indeed bestest boy ever.

The Tengu looks really off... like why is the color/texture of his beak identical to his feathers (which are also lacking in detail)? It just makes him look like a tacky Dinosaur from a children's show. The other yokai look alright for the most part.

I know it's very early but it's still my AOTS

I'm expecting Buchio to be on the thumbnail for every review lol

My only complaint about Tonari no Youkai-san is that Buchio has a calico fur pattern, but calicos are almost exclusively female; males only have calico patterns under exceedingly rare genetic conditions. But y'know what, becoming a nekomata is also pretty rare, so I'm willing to accept that maybe he's got Klinefelter syndrome, too.

Otherwise, the first three episodes have been delightful. You could have just strung them all together and told me it was a movie, and I'd be satisfied with it; this may be a slice-of-life show, but the climax in episode 3 was a better fight scene than many shounen series' ultimate battles.

I haven't cried yet, but I'm just waiting to see what Yuri is all about.

As a Natsume’s Book of Friends mega-fan this is definitely the show for me. Other than AiPri it’s my favorite new show of the season so far.

I too can say with certainty that this is one of the best anime of the season.

I knew James would go literal fanboy when he'd start reviewing this series.

And that battle in episode 3... I clapped like mad with it. Best episode I've seen in DECADES.

Typo in review: the town name is FUCHIgamori, not ENgamori.

Source: First episode, during the prologue describing the town. It's clearly pronounced that way:
そして今、ここはとある山間の、風がよく吹く町、縁(ふち)ヶ森町。

Also, episode three when the snake calls Jiro by his full name 縁火山 次郎坊, the first character in his name is the same as the settlement's and is pronounced the same way.

Unfortunately, all of CR's materials originally titled the town as Engamori which likely led to the confusion. They've corrected it in their title description (and so we've also corrected it in our encyclopedia and review, too).

Encyclopedia entry has been corrected, but not the review. It still says "the guardian of Engamori" as of this post.

I really loved this episode and how it encouraged communication with people to better understand them. When Buchio is warned about the Demon Lord being dangerous, he seeks out other people's opinions who know him better.

Poor Wagon though! You'd think that living in Japan for 40 years even as a car would grant him citizenship but no he's got even more paperwork to do than other new yokai Laughing

Do the crow Tengu use magic while dressing and undressing - it would be nearly impossible or impossible to get a T-shirt over their wings?

I’m more than happy to read several paragraphs on how cute Buchio is

The raiju incident makes me wonder if Mutsumi’s dad is experiencing something similar?

Other stories would have built up the mystery and tension of what was going on, so it was surprising to see everything wrapped up so quickly. Before things could even stew they just went, "oh, it's a parallel world" and then resolved it by the end of the episode. I guess they're giving the audience credit for knowing about this kind of thing these days. Presumably they also wanted to move on because this isn't new in this world and there's more important story lines in the future that requires this set up, so it should be interesting to see if this was a good choice or not for the narrative.

I can't help being curious about what happened to that first woman though. It seems like she was about to be hit by that train as she ran away...
