Good Lord, is that really the cover for Suzuka Vol.5?
Also I don't think it was really necessary to address that "issue", as their was nothing inherently wrong before.

You're a little off. The Phoenix show has 13 eps.
Quote: | “I want to give birth to hundreds and thousands of babies, so we can create a new village!” “That's why I want to find the Phoenix. That way, [my wife] can drink its blood and she'll never die. That way, she can have a thousand babies.” |
You really have to take into account the time when this takes place. People had lower life expectancies back then.
Quote: | ADV should also seriously consider doing reversible covers, because taking up a disc like this to the Best Buy checkout counter is wicked embarrassing. |
Not as embarrassing as some of the Shojo Beat covers. [And some of the Kurohime stuff...]

"Hell's Bells" eh? Love the AC/DC reference.
Ah, sarcasm, always good for a laugh; and a funny column this was this week.

Wow. Rarely have I seen a column hip-deep in sarcasm. I can only imagine the nasty messages that provoked you to write it like this.
I'm impressed - and that's not sarcasm.
On a more serious note, I fully agree that, content-wise, Welcome to the NHK is one of the better series out there right now. Some of its artistic issues go beyond just being stylish (in a negative way), but it is definitely a series everyone who considers themselves an otaku should at least try.

lol, somebody's sore from last week misogynistic debacle.
Although that No Child Left Behind rating was utterly hilarious. I don't get it of course, but I lol'd anyway. You should make that a regular feature, really.

Eh, I know it's from the original DVD's and all, but it really was bad.
It's satirical, but damn if I have to explain that to anyone else.

Darn you, Bamboo... I snorted tropical fruit juice up my nose at that line. Must have been the use of "wicked".
But yeah, as much as I'd love to get this series, I'd have to see if I can avoid getting caught by anyone with the case in my hands...

The internet is your friend.
And no, not bittorrent. Netflix, or a bunch of other sites that sell anime will do.

Uh... I don't understand why you aren't supposed to say you don't like a given series... If you think something's not good say so? I'd definitely want to know.
The only one I'm actively collecting out of these is the Phoenix series, which I've always enjoyed (except for that really odd film from the 70s... that one was just incomprehensible.).

I've only read the manga thus far and it makes sense in the context of the franchise.
I'll admit, I laughed.

Because the plebeian masses are always right in their opinions even if they don't make any sort of logical sense with their rhetoric. She's here to tell us what we wanna hear and appease us don't you know, not inform us. What would be the point of actually informing us instead of placating us?

Heck, most times they're cheaper anyway if you get the dvds from DeepDiscount.com or TRSI.com. Save time and embarrassment, it's a win-win situation.
Personally I doubt I'll finish Suzuka anytime soon. I am one of those people that always wants to finish what he starts and I know that will eventually cause me ti finish renting it through Netflix. For the time being however if I had to listen to Suzuka's character for another 5 minutes I'd have to rip my ears off. She's bitchy to fault (reminds me of an ex of mine) and I keep hoping she'll somehow just move away and never be heard from again.
edit--Since some seem to not get it the first part is half sarcastic and full of hyperbole (that's exaggeration for those who don't know). I figured it was obvious but I guess not.

Oh, come on.
Here's what actually happened: Bamboo called Magikano "misogynist" last week. A bunch of people took offense. Flame war. ???. Profit.
Apparently she decides to make fun of that this week. Or may be she's really angry, I dunno.

I don't know is I should laugh or cringe.
The cringing wins.
The only title I want to get out of those is NHK. I picked it up once before. The look my father gave me was somewhat priceless, and he went on a long rant about buying cartoon porn.
In the store.
Personally, I find the Witchblade covers worse. Volume 3 had the cashier looking at me like I had blood on my face.

Interesting review, funny to think I was agreeing until I realized she was being sarcastic. However I honestly think that the development of the characters in Suzuka was done extremely well, more so than almost any series I've seen. There are a lot of glimpses of changes in the characters throughout the series, though they're subtle and aren't completely obvious until the last volume. Sure that's different than series that have a progressive change, but that's what I think makes it the most interesting.
I think each of the characters changes a lot over the course of the series, but Suzuka continues to try to suppress that as much as she can. I can agree that it can make her unlikeable, but for me it made her more interesting, as her transformation seemed more important for the viewer since she's so resistant/stubborn to change. I thought it was interesting to view the story from Yamato's view and try to figure out what's on her mind.
*shrug* Maybe I just like this series a little too much. Other than DBZ and Inuyasha, I don't think there was a series that I looked forward to that I actually tracked the days it would take for the next DVD to arrive. The more realistic plot along with interesting and easy to relate to characters really brought the story to light, and made me care about the characters a lot.

NHK is one of my favorite releases currently. It is such a roller coaster ride for me to watch in that one minute I'm laughing, and the next minute I'm sad. One part in particular was the real situation with Yamazaki's girlfriend. I actually said "that's me" out loud while watching that part.
I plan to give Phoenix a try. Partly because I've heard more good than bad things about it, and partly because it's only $14.95 per volume.
I read the thread attached to last week's column, Bamboo. I'm sorry you had to deal with all that BS. Knowing that you wrote this week's column as a reaction to last week, and not purely for fun, kinda saps the funny out of it for me. You've turned me on to some great shows(yay, Saikano!) in the past and I've always appreciated the way you have written your column. Thank you!

I haven't read a shelf life column in a while, haven't been on ANN and I hate the layout of the column, but the content was amazing. I think I'll even read the next one even if it's not smart assy.
I have to say this column is one of my favorite in terms of actual reviews, only 2nd to individual volume reviews. Those people who want to just read the good stuff about an anime should go pick up NEWTYPE. Oh wait, that magazine is dying because people only buy it for the pretty pictures and an occassional interview.
Keep up the great work on your reviews. I hope to continue hearing the good and the bad about our future DVD releases.
