Just another case of Japanese self-censorship, yielding to pressure from foreign governments.
This document indicates that posting of certain content will be prohibited from these two countries, but doesn't mention viewing such content. |

Yeah- I was wondering about "viewing" art with adult content and I don't see anything implying that will be restricted. I do understand the concerns and need to restrict minors from accessing inappropriate adult content. It can be easy to come across that stuff, especially if you're an anime fan. Of course "they'll find out eventually"/"they'll find a way around restrictions" is true. I'm sure 99% of us have accessed stuff we shouldn't have when we were minors with internet access. BUT it can't be understated how badly a still-developing person can be affected by being excessively exposed to extreme adult content. Especially if they're not properly educated or regulated. (Source: I work in the mental health field and you'd be surprised how many young kids do certain things just because they've seen if on the internet and don't have a proper adult to teach them about consent and boundaries.) With that all said- I still think this is pretty extreme. There are artists in these countries who earn money by creating NSFW content and posting it on pixiv's fanbox. Just like the ban Tumblr attempted several years ago- this will just drive these artists out and force them to build their following up again on another platform. And I already think pixiv has a better system for adult content than most other platforms. Considering you have to indicate that your content is 18+ and there is a setting that allows you to filter out 18+ content. It's smoother than whatever Twitter/X is doing. I just think this is an egregious move when there could be other alternatives. For example, pixiv has a premium membership. Maybe only allow 18+ content to be visible to those with that membership? I'm sure there's a lot of law/ethics argument against this suggestion but I still think it at least regulates adult content without harming NSFW artists. |

The wording on the website makes it sound like it's only meant for realistic looking CG/AI stuff. My US friends can still see R18 content just fine but I guess it just prevents you from uploading stuff?
Either way, they flat out encourage people to change their location settings with a nudge and a wink so it's not that big a deal. |

"Blocks Adult Content" is a bit misleading, reading the new guidelines you could still post vanilla(like just nude) adult content depicting characters over the age of 18.
Also, as the above posters mentioned, the new guidelines don't mention anything about blocking 'viewing' any content on the site. Last edited by Blanchimont on Sun Apr 28, 2024 7:30 am; edited 1 time in total |

First of all, physical merchandise like magazines don't have age verifications. An adult can easily buy the magazines and then "pass them on" to whoever they want. It's always been like that and will still be like that. It's absolutely dumb to assume limiting online access is going to benefit anyone.
Second of all, if you think for a second restricting access isn't going to have negative effects that ripple, you're as naive as the idiots pushing for age verification. Let's wait and see how the teen pregnancies, rape, sexual assaults, etc. increase with the lack of access to satisfy urges and any related safe sex material that is put behind "18+" barriers. No one is going to want to host anything for safe sex related if the 18+ barrier exists in the first place. It's pretty obvious "educational purposes" are lost on the prudes and idiots who can't handle visible human skin. Trying to coddle the youth by limiting exposure isn't going to wash away the mental weakness that flawed logic creates in the first place. Intentionally creating opportunities for shock therapy when someone finally hits 18 years old is the best way to screw with the already delicate balance between safe sex practices and moderation of sexual urges. Puberty hasn't changed biologically so assuming that preventing access is going to "help" anything is laughable at the least. You want to see what happens when 11+ year old children with raging hormones can't access things for 7 years? The minute progress that we've made as a country in a decrease in the number of rape cases or sexual assault cases will disappear into history as will the mental strength to resist any of those urges in public regardless of age. I'm looking forward to all of idiots throwing up their hands and saying age verification isn't related to an increase in sex crime activity let alone teen pregnancies. I'll be counting those number of idiots to infinity it would appear. There's a good reason why you build up a tolerance to something rather than cutting off cold turkey and then launching a barrage of content all at once AFTER you've already suffered through puberty. Honestly, assuming every biological human can wait until 18 years old before doing something to ultimately "satisfy" that urge legally is the just as stupid as saying every man was created equally. Pure idiocy at its best. Birth defects, variations in biological functions are all proof precociousness is not just some fictional character trope. That includes all types of hormones and libido in all humans regardless of age. "Safety for all children" does NOT justify outright ignoring variations in human biology. If they want to push age verification, then trying children "as adults" needs to automatically be unlawful across the nation. You don't get to have your cake and eat it too. If children are under 18 years old for your "age verification" then trying children as adults is illogical because it makes absolutely no sense, a double standard, and needs to immediately be unlawful. And conservatives will use this to find a way to shoehorn ways to make it easy and legal to block any LGBTQI content.

There's a worrying rush of sites banning or otherwise forcing out adult content creators lately, and it mainly seems to come from US-based payment providers being lobbied by creepy evangelical organizations hiding behind the idea of protecting children or fighting sex trafficking while they really just want to control other people. It's very disturbing and I fear it's a slippery slope if we all don't push back.

As several previous examples have already proven in recent years, like the 2 cited in the news, the only ones who will suffer will be the creators who have not yet established their community on other sites, any lambda Internet user can simply use a free VPN or any similar method and continue on their way business as usual, a political move nothing more nothing less.

Banning AI generated art. That's bullshit. I STILL see AI generated art on pixiv.

It was banned on pixiv FANBOX specifically, not pixiv generally. |

There is a setting where you can block it from showing up in results, but this still requires them to label it properly. |

Then you should check the box on the settings. It will block almost all AI art from showing. Also, blame Mastercard and VISA for this recent bullshit. |

this is entirely on the Credit Card companies. No laws were being broken on pixiv in the US. Everything on there is perfectly legal, this was determined by the Supreme Court in the early 00s when they basically said banning drawings violates free speech (constitutional right). So they're using excuses about legal stuff instead of just admitting that they're folding to basically financial blackmail by credit card processors.

A bit misleading of a title, they're not banning Adult content. It's more that they're banning users from posting things that, in their country, are already illegal.
Normal adult content is legal. Most people likely have old JP accounts, though, so...it will be impossible to enforce this regardless. Others will just create a JP account and use a VPN so...yea this is impossible to enforce so they probably won't... It's just for legality for financial purposes. It also means that THEY, the site, cannot get sued. So, it's all good. |

It's true that it's not a blanket ban on all adult content, but most of the things they are banning are not illegal in the USA. As gross as it may be, courts have ruled multiple times that fictional sexual content involving nearly everything on that list--yes, including minors, animals, and gore--is legal and protected under the first amendment. As has been mentioned, this is all due to pressure from payment processors, notably Visa and MasterCard. This is just the latest in a series of sites they've targeted; DLsite has stopped accepting MasterCard/Visa entirely, and Fanbox no longer accepts them as payment for R18 artists. Over on the English-speaking side of the internet, sites like Patreon and PornHub have been similarly affected, and they tried to do the same thing to OnlyFans (and I'm really not sure how OnlyFans managed to resist). Visa and MasterCard claim to not impose moral judgments on business, but it's open knowledge that they're controlled by conservative religious groups that will target any business that starts to make too much money selling adult services. |
