Well, after watching that video news clip of the story, I must say that, that certain title shouldn't have been in the children's section. I mean Absolute Boyfriend is find and dandy for us teens and such, but it definitely should not have been in the kid's section of the store.

Common sense, people. There will always parents complaining about nudity no matter what's its context. Whoever decided to put it there was foolish.

Was a large stock there, or just a volume? Hm...I remember seeing one Barnes & Noble with manga in its children's section. But these were the innocent ones.

Most Canadian book store chains I've been to shelve graphic novels closer to their SciFi/Fantasy section [Chapters, where it's a good bits away from the kids section], or in the Young Adult section [which is usually a good bit away from the kids section], and some will often take books aimed at certain demographics and shelve them elsewhere [ie- if it really is a Kids GN, it will get shelved with kids material, like Scholastic's Graphic novels].
Most libraries also tend to break down graphic novels, putting more risque material in the Adult literature section, rather then the Young Adult section where it's normally shelved. I think it's responsible of this store to recognize this and move the material [though it's also important to note that in book stores or libraries, parents should always keep an eye on the material their kids purchase/take out, as they are the ones who are truly responsible for their children, not the booksellers/libraries (most libraries have it clearly stated in their policies that if a kid takes out a mature book, it's the parents responsibility to monitor what they take out, not the librarian's)] |

The manga shouldn't have been in the kid's section but I really think the mom's reaction and the new's story was a little much. They weren't just complaining that the manga was in the kid's section but that it was in the store. They act like it's porn or something.
Okay so there is some nudity. You can see nudity if you go to an art museum. Maybe all art museums should be adult only as well. |

The manga that I've seen in the children's section has been the innocent stuff (Cardcaptor Sakura, Sailor Moon, Digimon, Pokemon, etc), so I understand why this parent had such a fit over it.

Not at the local Chapters I visit - almost all the manga titles are located right by or in the children's section of books. I found Welcome to the N.H.K. in the children's section along with Basilisk, Absolute Boyfriend, Godchild, Angel Sanctuary, etc. I don't believe the people who work there know what's in those mangas. They probably figure as long as it has pictures, then it must be for children - even if the books come shrink wrapped. However, no parent has complained about it. |

Guess they musn't have a standard store layout. Though I do remember one Chapters I'd been too with a similar layout- though the manga was still in the Scifi/Fantasy Novel section. Which just happened to be directly across from their kids section [so the manga was close by, but not really part of it]. I think responsible parents know to browse this sort of stuff before they buy it for their kids [the fact that the woman in this article chose to complain in store, rather then after she bought it for the kid, or after she'd found it among the kids things, is a good thing. Of couse, the news'll sensationalize it mind you]. |

I agree that Absolute boyfriend shouldn't have been in the Children's Section... I mean, the whole entire point of the story is sex... Young Adult is my choice (It's not that bad... no nudity, really).
@ GhstDreamer: GodChild... in the children's section???  That story is too much for a kid... Especially vol. 6.

Books-a-million. I've visited a few when i went down South. Its been a few years but the few titiles they had weren't in just one section but spread out throughout the store.
If my memory is any help I remember Peach Girl, Pita Ten, Chobits, and something esle in the Kids/Teens section. (the store I went to didn't have any real boundaries; you could just sort of wander into the other section.) Barnes & Noble is guilty of these too, I don't get why they can't keep everything together. I want to know if there was a stack of books of the shelf or had some manga rat taken it over there to read. But given the way people react to stuff like this today, i'm surprised she's not sueing on the thought : "her son was tramitized." |

I don't know what Barnes & Noble that you shop at, the the ones near me keep manga in the Sci-Fi aisle - no where near the Children's' section. I have to agree that Absolute Boyfriend is not a children's' title. Far from it. But is certainly isn't porn. What certain people forget is that people pick things up and walk around with them, decide that they don't want it and just drop it on the nearest surface. I work retail, in the Home area, every day I find things just dumped on my merchandise - lingerie, clothes, purses, jewelry, etc. And how many of you have gone to your local grocery store, Costco, Sam's Club and see packages of meat dumped wherever? That mother's reaction is a little over the top but Books a Million is a bit careless in their product placement as well. |

The story is unclear whether the store regularly stored all their manga in the kids' section (stupid) or if somebody just took a pile of manga into the kids' section to read. I used to work in a bookstore, and I'd always find sex books in the kids' section because 1) somebody was looking for a secluded spot to look at the books, or 2) because somebody was either sick or thought it was funny to purposely "hide" sex books in that section.
The Borders where I live have the manga in between the SF/Fantasy section and the YA section, and far away from the kids' section. |

The ones here (i've been to at least 10 in MI) have a graphic novel section. But then, several titles are over in the Kids section/Young adult. I can take pictures next time I visit one if you'd like.
