Why was G-1 not shortlisted for best foreign film or, let's be real here, film?

Gil: Because it's up to the home countries to submit the overseas films, and Japan did not submit it for International Film.

From the article: “The Academy will announce the final nominees on January 23, and the awards ceremony will be held on March 10.”
Not every category has been announced yet.
EDIT: Ah, now I also see that Godzilla just wasn’t submitted, the foreign film nominations have already been announced.
That’s a shame, as Godzilla Minus One was an amazing movie.

I'd love if Minus One got a bunch of nods despite not being submitted for Best Foreign Film. It'd be Ran all over again.

I imagine they didn't anticipate the buzz and success it would get from American audiences.

As probably the only person on this site who follows the Oscars, I would love for these two nominations to happen, it would be big for the Japanese side of things. Not to mention The Boy and the Heron being the only thing that can dethrone Across the Spider-Verse (which is ALSO likely to be nominated for Score and Visual Effects) in Animated Feature.

And the thing is, the film that they did select (Perfect Days) will probably be nominated.
