While I am no stranger to roguelite like Hades, Returnal, and Crypt of the Necrodancer, all of these have systems that give lasting progress, which make subsequent runs easier—and make you feel like even your worst runs weren't entirely meaningless.

If I recall correctly, Shiren 3 (for the Wii) was given a hard time in Japan for being too easy compared to the previous titles. And even other mystery dungeon spin-offs got rejected for similar reasons, Nightmare of Druaga in particular. I suppose Pokemon had so much franchise power it didn't matter there.

So, funny enough, it feels like the devs were ahead of their time with those approaching-roguelite spin-offs. But I can definitely understand why they shy away from lightening Shiren's burden. I'd be interested in what they'd do with a new original roguelite-esque title, since now there's an accepting audience for that. (Although I'm definitely glad to see Shiren proper continue)
