Well the idea behind Comiket is for fans to connect with a limited selection of favorite circles, it's not really an all-day/weekend hangout place for fans to experience anime like how we think of anime cons in the West.
The primary reason Comiket was held over 3 or 4 days in the past was because the number of circles kept surpassing the amount of space available, hence using more days to accommodate them all.
Now that the site has been expanded, even if pre-pandemic attendance is surpassed, it's still big enough to fit all those circles in the shorter time span. Just going by the rule "time is money" you can see why it's less expensive that way.

When did it expand and by how much? I thought Big Sight was already used to the max.
Also aren't they still bottlenecking the attendance numbers by selling a set number of badges/wristbands instead of letting anyone that wants inside?

If you want to attend all day, then, yes, there is a set number of tickets sold that you have to buy in advance. They do have a late entry ticket that you can buy at the door for 500 yen, but that's only good after 1pm, which is how I went to this year's summer Comiket.

A quick look at the Wiki on Big Sight provides info about an expansion of about 43,000 square meters due to the Aomi and South halls made available in 2019.
I think it's that attendance still hasn't reached pre-pandemic levels, or won't in the near future so perhaps the site is far too large to justify making it a 3-day event rather than 2. And because it's likely to be a ticketed event again in the future that could indefinitely halt it's growth.
