Is it me or do some of those look like they're not actually carved in the pumpkin?

Many aren't.
What you do is thin out the pumpkin, and then carve away the parts of the skin that you want to glow. Then when you light it from the inside, those parts will glow. It gives you more leeway in the final outcome.
It's also a really great way to achieve "shading" on a pumpkin-- by having carved section, shaved sections, and uncarved sections, you already have three "colors".

I wish I could enter to win the free stuff. But I don't know a thing about carving pumpkins. Times like these make you really wish you took art classes when you were young.

Wow. The past winners' pumpkins look amazing. I won't enter (my creation would only serve as a nice laugh for the ANN judges), but good luck to those who are.

I actually have a pumpkin waiting to be carved in my kitchen. I've only carved a pumpkin one other time, and I was 5. Sadly, my artistic skills have not improved in the past 21 years, so I won't be participating (no matter how much I'd love to have a free copy of the Hell Girl starter set)
I didn't realize what the NANA pumpkin was until someone mentioned that it was NANA. It's good, it's just a bit indistinct compared to the rest. I wonder if I could carve Chu-chu from Utena...

I might give this a try....-goes off to look for a cool sillhouette of Jun-sama to use as a reference-
That Alphonse Elric pumpkin is amazing, and I love the detail in the ParaKiss one o.o

I find it odd that one of the prizes is not Pumpkin Scissors!?
Anyway good luck to everyone.

I have a question, which anime is the 3rd one from the left from?
The Hellsing and Death Note pumpkins are great. All of them are to be exact.

The third one is NANA; it's several of the main characters silhouetted like they are in a few of the opening and ending animations.

Thanks, ANN, for holding the contest again this year. I was getting worried that you might not have it. Nicer prizes this time, too!
(I wanna see that Utena pumpkin, by the way. It's my favorite show.)
