It'll probably not replace the Spectacular-shaped hole in some Spider-Man fans hearts, but hopefully it's better than the last two attempts at making a Spider-Man cartoon. I still want a Spider-Verse cartoon from Sony.

Do we really need another Spiderman cartoon so soon? It feels like we're oversaturated with Spiderman content as is lately. A little cool-down period would be nice.

The show itself was announced back in 2021. We even know some of the cast members and seen some of the character designs. Polygon simply revealed that they are the ones, who work on the show.

It’s been what 13 years?
Even people who remember the meh Fox series don’t moan about how that series ended in an unfinished state.

Ultimate & Marvel’s Spider-Man weren’t bad granted the former got stupid around season 3 but ignoring some of the creative decisions it’s fine. I admittedly tuned out of the latter (not because if declining interest) but it was a sound series….and then of course they had to do some predictable stuff….like introduce Mary Jane.

I understand that there's been an oversaturation in Spider-Man content since maybe 2016, when he made his first appearance in the MCU, and afterwards more appearances and movies in said MCU, more video games by Insomniac, Sony's live-action attempts to expand their IP, the Spider-Verse movies, the 2021 Disney Junior series, and Amazon's upcoming Spider-Man Noir series.
But it's been almost three years since the 2017 animated series that aired on Disney X D ended, and this upcoming one which is loosely based on the MCU Spidey isn't coming out until 2024. That's a respectable cool-down imho.

So it´s a CG anime. Polygon does good work if they are given the money. We´ll see and people still complain that the just ok 90s cartoon failed to animate its plotted-out 6th season. Especially as Unlimited´s equally unfinished 13 ep run took its place. Lol.
There hasn´t been a good Spider-man cartoon since 2009 and Spectacular is the only actually good Spider-man cartoon on top of that. One of the less than 10 good Marvel cartoon shows at that. The MCU itself already underdelivered with What If…? so we need more more MORE Marvel animation. Not less and Spider-man is the most popular superhero of my lifetime. Technically due to merch but his truly awful current comics outsell all else by a mile so it´s not just T-shirts doing the heavy lifting. Insane that DC is the only comics publisher to have a stable animation output for varied demographics with an eye for quality control. Marvel has all the Spider-man rights outside movies btw. Sony sold back the TV rights years ago.

15, actually.

I prefer the 90s Marvel cartoons over the later ones. Nowhere near as memorable or good as the DCAU, but they were fun. Spectacular always seemed way overrated to me and never got the hype. Didn't care for the art style or the changes made. Really don't care for high schooler Spider-Man much in general.
Speaking of which, this is Polygon so I assume it'll be CG? Meh. Don't have high hopes for superhero cartoons these days with their reliance on movie-universe synergy and general lack of interest in action cartoons anymore.

I never understood the hate for this one. If anything, it was like one of the best things to come out of Phase 4.

Spider-Man: Freshman Year was announced by Marvel Studios back in 2021, where they showed concept art and the series cast.
It was assumed to be an American animation, but there were rumours of production issues - staff being laid off, etc. So, I wonder if Polygon Pictures are simply assisting, or if production has restarted with them as the primary studio.

It's probably animation services. After all, they did animate Star Wars: The Clone Wars (2008), Tron: Uprising, Transformers: Robots in Disguise, Star Wars Resistance and an episode of Love Death & Robots S3

This show has had a very strange history. It was supposed to be a prequel to the Tom Holland Spider Man, then it became its own thing inspired by the Ditko/Lee run, and now it’s an anime. Is this necessary? Even yesterday Bob Iger admitted they oversaturated the market with Marvel programming.

Even if Polygon Pictures animates it, does that make it count as anime compared to their animation on other shows like Transformers: Prime? Is ANN now contractually obligated to talk about this show?
But this is probably the first real news we've gotten about the show in a while. Have they been animating it from day one or did they take over production duties? Is that why it's taken so long for it to come out?

And even with 15 minutes of screentime she was one of the best characters on the show.

The most traumatising Spider-Man unmasking since the Green Goblin unmasked.

Polygon Pictures is perhaps best known among Japanese animation circles for the two Ajin television anime series and film trilogy, and the Godzilla: Kaijū Wakusei film trilogy. |
There's no way you said that when Sidonia no Kishi and Blame exist. I'll even excuse mentioning Ajin, but to leave SnK out of that sentence like that wasn't Polygons best series when fans have been begging for the next season (they instead gave fans that "movie" to end the series in 2021) is just egregious. SnK was so popular that Polygon decided to adapt Blame, another Nihei series. Then they worked on Kaina, another Nihei series recently. This wouldn't have happened if not for SnK. First ufotable, now Polygon. The disrespect is crazy.

Still, rebooting the series every couple of years is still a big turnaround imo. I know it’s kind of the comic book way, but it’s starting to feel tiresome and formulaic. Makes me wonder what the point of Marvel’s Spider-Man was. If they wanted an MCU Spider-Man series that would’ve been the time to do it, when interest was at its peak.
