That's actually a lot of money considering it released in the middle of the week.

To be fair, the Mario movie opened on a Wednesday. Maybe the numbers will be higher on Friday and the weekends. |

That would be my guess. It also seems the film is fairly critic proof, even if it’s a family film and most of its competitors this weekend skew older (I doubt kids will want to sit through a docudrama about Air Jordan sneakers). |

To be clear, we're talking about its Wednesday opening debut, not its first weekend total gross. The Super Mario Bros. Movie seems to be aiming at a $120 to $160 million weekend gross, which would make it the biggest debut for a movie this year, and adding international markets, it could reach over $300 million worldwide. The movie seems to be doing great in many markets like Latin America and Europe. I can imagine Mario becoming the highest-grossing movie based on a videogame, surpassing 2015's Warcraft. |

Yes, but at the risk of being less profitable because of how much more expensive a 100% animated movie is. Sonic was much cheaper to make. |

Kirin: 2016.
ran: It's actually cheaper than the last Sonic by $10 million. https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Super_Mario_Bros._Movie |

Seems a bit lower than I expected to be honest.

I just hope this movie will not completely kill DnD: Honor Among Thieves. It's such a good movie.

I was just thinking that, but honestly, parents are kinda spoiled for choice here. Either one is a good family-friendly time, imo. D&D for slightly older kids, Mario for the young-in’s. |

Sonic 2 ended with a global grossing of around 400 million. Actually, it seems likely Mario will easily surpass that, and by far. |

Look everyone, it's a Mario Film by the company behind Minions, 2 things that will be a big draw for 6 year olds. I'm pretty sure it is going to be one of the years largest grossing Films, you don't need to fret about it.

Theaters are full of nostalgic adults and their kids (some even in costume) skipping school for a day (it's not spring break). Even showtimes as early as 9am are almost sold out
Big disconnect between critics and the audience |
