Does this mean the end to fansubs? I admit I download a ton of fansubs. If it was a series I really enjoyed, I buy them once licensed and released in the US. If I am unsure I will just rent from Netflix to make a decision. I hope this does not kill fansubs, they are a great way to get hooked into new series.

Well there's always Veoh, LiveVideo, DailyMotion, Blinkx and eSnips as an alternative.

Not so, in my opinion. It only covers those that provide/stream content which are "illegal under Japanese Copyright law". Also note that it's doesn't imply all fansubs.

We can only hope.

Yeah, and robbery is a great way to get hooked on the latest flatscreen televisions just like grand theft is a great way to get hooked on the latest sports car. You'll forgive me for hoping the fansub crowd ends up with a lot of fines for their years of rampant freeloading and misplaced pride.

Copyright law is far more sophisticated than those who break it. What's illegal in one country is typically illegal in all signatory countries by preexisting agreement. All the various distinctions that are so often referenced usually have no basis in modern reality. Just like people who think a car chase ends at the county/state line.

Ah well when the witchhunt begins, Japan will suddenly ask "why?" when their economy spirals out of control into the toilet never realizing it was just this one piece of legislation that did it all...

1. "Witch hunt" is implied to be foolish (in part) because we all know that people aren't actually practicing witchcraft, but we do know that some people really are freeloading off fansubs without paying for them.
2. This isn't going to blow away the Japanese economy and implying that it will just makes me laugh. Eventually people will end up buying what they want, just like they did with BVUSA.

A witch hunt applies to more than just a rediculous target, if the objective is absolutely impossible to achieve then savagely attacking (or suing) people caught is as frivolous as if they hadn't even done anything. I'm not saying that because piracy can't be stopped entirely nothing should be done about it but if you strip away all the blustering and hubris on the part of the production companies and you find that people are still getting the material for free if they really want it.

Actually, copyright law does definitely differ from country to country, though most likely a fair amount of the basics are the same. But even the length of copyright can be different (I know, for example, that copyright lasts longer in the US than in Canada, though the US is pushing for that to change).

In my opinion no matter if you make something illegal, there will still be people willing to break it. I don't think Fansubs are going away for awhile, if ever.

I'll only applaud them for this when they actually start fining people and making them pay for the stuff they downloaded illegally. People need to realize you can't just download whatever you want for free, that is not how the world works. Nothing says that better than presenting them with a bill for everything they have downloaded illegally

Persecution complex?
The witch hunts were a horrible thing where people were accused to keep the machine going & in most countries the best one could hope for was to be declared "Not Proven" with the State reserving the right to go after you anytime they felt like it. Particularly in countries where the State or the hunters gained the property of the witches thousands of witches were found. One was often tortured until one confessed, asked to confess again & if one recanted, one was tortured again & thus it continued until you confessed to being a witch without being under torture. People were asked to name total strangers as witches just to feed the machine
Are you suggesting Japan is going to do this? Or do you think they'll just go after people getting something for nothing? I'm thinking they're only going to target people inside their borders so most foreign fans will indeed be ok to download with impunity as they always have.

But under the Berne Convention any work protected in a member country is given the same protection in all member countries. The prosecution is may differ though.
This wouldn't affect fansubs unless it really cuts down on people uploading the raw video on p2p, which I doubt at this point.

Ah yes-another Salem witch hunt starts!! I download fansubs and nothing you can say or do will stop me-ever. I've heard all the "you're stealing intellectual property and killing the anime industry" pap so many times I have the speill memorized. The only way downloading is ever gonna stop is to kill the internet-don't think that's gonna happen anytime soon. And yes-I do purchase a lot of R1 anime dvds so I do my part to support the ADVs and Funimations out there.
