Every time you think a character is edgy and bonkers, just wait for the next arc and behold a new even more edgelord being introduced. It is amazing.
Wait for Shidou and his analogy about the goal being a womb, lol
Honestly, Blue Lock is really wacky but the characters are so different than any other spokon I've read/seen. You end up rooting for at least on the edgelords in this show.
Admittedly, I haven't been watching the anime but from the review I think it's actually doing the manga justice so I'll have to check it out.

That's not football! It's handegg!
Despite that one mayor flaw I am thoroughly enjoying this series. Sure it's ridiculous, but it's fun! The whole premisse is flawed to begin with, as one fabulous striker alone won't make you world champion. I mean, just look how Haaland's Norway did on this world cup. Also, the idea that only the winner will be in the national team....I'd think #2 would still be pretty darn useful in the team, and what if your #1 gets injured? But it's best to just turn your brain of and enjoy the ride! And it certainly is more fun than the actual world cup....

What I find funny about bringing up Aoashi is that if Ashito were to end up articipating in Blue Lock, he would unironically do super well at it - not only does he have pretty much the same "ability" that Isagi has, but he prominently shows the hunger/ego that is seeked by... well, Ego.

Everything makes sense now. Every. Single. Thing. I knew there was a reason I liked this so much and how familiar it seemed to me!
Isagi and Bachira have pretty much the same dynamic as the protagonistic duo in both Kamisama no Iutoori and Kamisama no Iutoori 2. In other words...let's just say that the abbreviation of the title is appropriate.
Instead of gore it also goes for psychological warfare. Ah, it's just the gift that keeps on giving!

I commend your knowledge of obscure football facts, like the 82 Austria - West Germany collusion .

I don't know if they're heroes given that they're just athletes (athletes save you from boredom but rarely are they literally saving people's lives), but there's definitely characters to root for. Most of the characters are like that, imo. Being confident and wanting to win isn't really a negative in my book.
Their personalities aren't really all that different from other sports shows and a lot of action shounen.

Quote: | Sports anime archetypes are ubiquitous enough that you could legitimately make a whole show just exploring the bonkers backstory of the kind of sports sociopaths who face down the good guys in any other anime. |
Yowapeda pretty much did that for Midousuji, with a backstory that actually brought me to tears. I just can't hate the crazy ruthless psycho after that.
I'm still on the fence about BlueLock though. So far there's not one character I really like to root for or feel at all invested in their success or failure. I've been on the verge of dropping it for the last couple episodes, so even if I make it through this cour, I'm not sure I'll stick around for the next. Watching it in tandem with Yowapeda, its exact opposite, has helped, though the latter missing a couple of weeks has just made it all the harder to keep up with BL.
