Survival-horror fans will recognize the name Clock Tower, a series of horror games from CAPCOM that started on the Super Famicom.

A quick correction, but Capcom has never owned the Clock Tower IP. It was originally by Human Entertainment, and when that studio went out of business in 2000 Sunsoft bought the rights to the series, & Sunsoft still looks to own the IP to this day. Capcom only ever co-developed & published Clock Tower 3 alongside Sunsoft, and that's likely why CT3 isn't a part of the festivities covered, since Sunsoft doesn't fully own that one specific entry.

As for Square-Enix's NFT surprise, I'm honestly not shocked that was the reveal, but they really should have thought of a better name that wouldn't have directed people down a different direction; talk about playing dirty.

Witch on the Holy Night / Mahoutsukai no Yoru is a rerelease of the 2012 PC game of the same name, but with a higher resolution and voice acting.
Although the Aozaki sisters appear in a lot of Type-Moon works, dating back to Tsukihime and Kara no Kyoukai (and including a lot of the Fate series too), the story is standalone and doesn't require familiarity with any of those to understand and enjoy. It's also the shortest of Type-Moon's novel games (much closer to the length of a print novel), so it makes a great entry point for anyone intimidated by the volume of their other releases.

I'm preordering the Japanese release because then Yen isn't doing so hot right now and it comes out a month earlier, but it currently looks like you'll get the full set of language options no matter which version you buy, which is always a great feature.

(Edited to be more polite and informative.)

Why is the section on Mahoyo written as if it's a brand new game full of unknown and potentially divisive details and not a port of a game from 2012 with added voice acting? English-only fans won't have actually read it before this release, but anyone who reads wikis has known at least the broad strokes of the plot for almost a decade.

I don't even know what you're talking about with regards to Mahoyo, and I'm assuming you're using a Japanese title which complicates matters further.

I cannot presume the knowledge of my readership, so even if I knew what "Mahoyo" was, I'd have to approach it as a new thing for the sake of people who haven't read wikis. This column isn't just for diehards, even when it comes to stuff I'm a huge fan of I can't just say "Oh, yeah, Izuna's been around for decades, if you're reading this then you've read the wiki". You answered your own question, some fans just won't know.

To clarify, since I think my first post may have given you the wrong impression, I am not asking why you gave a detailed description of what the game is. That's obviously useful to people. I'm asking why you included multiple sentences about how established fans may react to it without mentioning that it's a rerelease, so established fans aren't going to be shocked by anything in it. Even the English Amazon page you linked to calls it an "HD remaster."

Not everyone has played Witch On The Holy Night, even if they're massive Tsukihime fans. It's not hard, dude. Take a step back and breathe.

This isn't a news article.

This is: http://4NN.cx/.187390

The details you're asking for have been public information since July. The new information is the demo and the rest is context Jean-Karlo chose to add. Please move on instead of trying to backseat drive the column.

I'm looking forward to reading Mahoyo in January once my preorder comes in. Hopefully this leads to TsukiRe getting brought over as well, let alone FSN.

Tsukihime is one of those things where I can kinda see why it's never really been brought over (as much as I love Arcueid, Tsukihime is... kinda not great). But with how massive Fate is? With how much of a dedicated VN audience there is in the US and the success of both "adult" VNs and all-ages VNs like the Hakuoki games or Go! Go! Nihon? It's bewildering that the powers that be haven't seen all the people chomping at the bit over Saber and said "Oh hey, maybe we should give 'em a nice fancy-pants Fate/Stay Night Switch port in English".

This is one of those cases where if we want [×] then we need to support [Y], I think. So good on ya for supporting Witch on the Holy Night. It just might help bring Saber home.

went and made his own successor in the form of NightCry. Currently, available on Steam and the PS Vita

Oh man, the Vita version of NightCry came out in 2019 and it's such an experience. Has to be of the worst ports I've seen

Maybe its better on pc but I'm not gonna get the same game twice after that experience.

Fate is too old and too well known now. Besides, I don't really see Nasu liking the way he wrote Fate back then. There are a lot of ideas and stylistic trappings that no longer match his current writing style. He openly said he wanted to fully rewrite the Fate route. And before now I have the impression that Type-Moon never thought they had too much of a fandom outside of Japan, whatever reason they may have to be.

What I hope, though, is that this means more Tsukihime adjacent works. There's a lot of interesting stuff in the Dead Apostle/Holy church side of the setting and hopefully the upcoming Fate Strange Fake anime calls attention to that.

oh, and, also, I may have misread but the text gives the impression that Mahoyo has multiple endings which is not the case. Mahoyo is a kinetic novel, so no branching or choices. It's essentially an animated storybook.

The game wasn't great on PC either. I really only recommend it to die-hard Clock Tower fans who want something similar but nowhere near as good.

Still waiting for a NightCry discount.

Also might as well take the chance to mention the Remothered games are another Clock Tower inspired series. Not that I've played them yet.

Well that was a letdown. Instead of another Parasite Eve game, we got NTF instead. Sad

When people talk about a spiritual successor to Clock Tower, is there a specific game they're all trying to recapture? I seem to remember all the Clock Towers being really different.
