They should try to get Aaron McGruder to attend.

They're expecting up to 10,000 people? I'm finding it hard to control my laughter. I'm not even sure they'll hit that minimum they quoted...especially if their web site only gets 5000 visits per month. Even if that's 5000 individual visitors, not everyone that visits the site is going to go to the con...not even close.

This is Philly, not one of those burgs in the middle of nowhere.

Yes, but there are only a handful of other conventions in the US to have 10,000 people. They've all been around at least 5 years.

Even Katsucon, which is in DC (clearly a major metropolitan area) and has been around for 13 years and is very well known has only 6,200 paid attendees.

I stand by my statement. Expecting 10,000 is unrealistic. ...and given the lack of promotion they've done, I don't even think they'll hit 2,000. I've watched anime convention attendances over the years while working on AnimeCons.com, so I have a pretty good idea of what I'm talking about.

Now you say there's only a handful with 10k plus right? They've all been around for more then 5 years as you say. My question is at which year in their history did the eclipse the 10k mark? I think location obviously does play a part, and a new con in Philly or NY is more likely to get people then a new one in the middle of North Dakota for instance. But expecting 10k plus opening year is a bit unlikely. I know many people in the Philly area so I hope the con does well enough at least to continue on past this first attempt.

Maybe it's possible. I forget, but how many did NY's BAAF get the first year?

3,500 ...and it was also VERY heavily promoted AND run by Central Park Media (who was doing a lot better in those days than they are now). ...also, it's strongly believed that BAAF counted people who registered for multiple days multiple times, so that number is likely inflated. (Someone who got a 3 day pass would have been counted 3 times.) Other anime conventions count people just once.

BAAF info: http://www.animecons.com/events/info.shtml/445

...and the other thing about their web site traffic. I have to wonder how much of that is web robots like Google, Yahoo, and others. I have few low traffic web sites and 4000 visitors in a month is really nothing.

AFAIK Anime Boston has had the BIGGEST first year ever (ie. more people at their first con than any other con), they didn't even hit HALF of 10k. (they were a little more than 4k) It is POSSIBLE that they'll hit the low end of their estimate (2k for a first year in a big city is not that unusual anymore, but the cycle is falling IMO) but there is no way in hell they hit 10k this November unless they drop reg. rates down to $0 and practically shove people in the convention.

sorry for the necro guys and the other thread, but i thought you might like to see this about this particular con.

tcon turned out to be a complete failure. badges where not handed out, no badge checks, no security, no posted schedule,no annoucments, no annoucments about major cancel's

when told they should come back till management reorganized, this arrived in my box:

who is this person you may ask?

also they proceeded to call their attendee's stupid and denied any malfunction of this con with this post
