That's pretty neat. Koichi Sugiyama is a legend. Glad to see him and his legacy being honored and preserved for how much he changed gaming.

I mean, other people who left positive marks but had shitty opinions also got stories about their lives being told,so no surprise here.
Besides,the guy's dead now,so it's not like we're supporting him by checking it out,anyway...

I still can't believe he's gone. He was such an amazing man. I look forward to seeing this when it comes out.

Well, aside from the LGBTQ part he sounds like a good guy.

Hey ANN, your title is not at all tendentious.
We're far from the great and neutral journalism we used to have.
Sometime, the ones who write the articles must elevate themselves above the mass and even their personal opinions.
That said, it's okay to have opinions on both side in forums. I'm just not confortable when we mix anime, politics and writer personal opinions on news articles
Thank you to consider it next time, don't take it as an insult and be professional...

what's biased or non-neutral about the article's title? he's factually controversial. his statements caused debate on japanese social media, even ignoring western social media. whether you agree, disagree, or dont care, its just the basic truth.

They stated facts that the person has said with sources to some of his remarks.
What about that is a personal opinion?

Presumably the "controversal" part. Referring to a respected industry veteran like Sugiyama as a "controversal composer" is pretty reductive. I've only really seen a few Western game sites and journalists call Sugiyama controversal. He's certainly not controversal in Japan. It's like the people who call Kentaro Miura, Akira Toriyama, or Eiichiro Oda 'controversal' because their series has stuff they dislike in it. It doesn't reflect the actual consensus.

Headlines are reductive almost by definition. But nowhere in the article is it indicated who thinks the subject is controversial, so it doesn't matter whether some consensus of people find him controversial or not. Lastly, the myth of "journalistic objectivity" has long been used to brow beat writers into ignoring some truths, in this case that the subject has 100% definitively denied war crimes and stigmatized LGBTQ+ people. These harms should not be ignored just because he wrote some iconic tunes.

The composer was literally a racist and homophobe.

It's actually completely unlike those. I think you'll find that people are generally very accepting when a creator's work has things they dislike in it; in fact, the three you list are widely loved. Miura was incredibly widely mourned when he passed. It's a different matter when a creator themselves has hateful, harmful opinions, as was the case with Sugiyama. Japanese media may be more forgiving of him, but, well, we're not writing in Japanese.

Also Oda is controversial because of his defense of Watsuki. It's misleading to make it out like people's sole objections to Oda are over problematic content in One Piece.

I've seen a lot of hate directed towards Miura due to his views on women and sexual content involcing minors. I don't see how it's any different than Sugiyama, aside from Dragon Quest not being as popular in the west as titles like Berserk and One Piece are so people are more willing to ignore some of the things those creators have said. But fiction does not exist in a vacuum. If someone like Eiichiro Oda and Akira Toriyama depict racial minorities and LGBT people as negative light then it seems reason to say they're views they themselves hold.
I've witnessed a lot of positivity for Sugiyama in the JRPG scene though. I don't think he's generally seen as controversal even in the west though. This is the first time I've seen him called controversal so it's a bit surprising to me.
