Wow, this sounds really interesting.
Are these 80 pagers going to be full size comics or standard B&W manga size? Are all members of CLAMP working on it or just a couple? Any word on what the story might be? Does this mean they are stopping another series? |

This is pretty interesting. I'd like to know if they are going to originals along with older stuff by them and how it will look in its format.

I presume that this is solid and something will actually make it to store shelves, unlike the report from three years ago when Anime On DVD seemed to think that C.B. Cebulski had stated that they'd do something for Marvel?

Did someone say "press release"?
Dark Horse joins with world-renowned creators CLAMP to welcome fans into a new era of manga Last year Dark Horse celebrated its twentieth anniversary of publishing original graphic works by some of the world’s greatest creators. Next year, Dark Horse celebrates their twentieth anniversary of publishing manga in English. This year, at San Diego Comic-Con Dark Horse is proud to announce that these two commitments held for so long have come together. Dark Horse will have the honor of publishing a new original manga created by Satsuki Igarashi, Mokona, Tsubaki Nekoi and Ageha Ohkawa.—the manga-ka all-female supergroup known to their millions of fans worldwide as CLAMP. These four brilliant writers and artists work together to produce award-winning, best-selling manga, including RG VEDA, X, Chobits, Tsubasa, and xxxHOLiC. CLAMP’s original manga with Dark Horse will be launched simultaneously in the United States, Japan, and Korea. The story will come out in a small digest consisting of about eighty pages each, which will then be collected into trade paperbacks with bonus material. CLAMP and Dark Horse are coining the bilingual term Mangettes to describe this innovative new format for manga distribution. This digest format, or Mangette, signifies CLAMP's personal wish to reach their large international readership by now speaking to them directly as artists through Dark Horse, and on a basis of equality with their Japanese fans. CLAMP and Dark Horse chose the term Mangettes to describe this revolutionary format, whose Japanese pronunciation, mangetsu, means “the full moon.” The two kanji in mangetsu also have the individual meanings of “fulfilled” and “monthly,” reflecting what will be a monthly appearance of each CLAMP Mangette. According to CLAMP, “Mangettes are a completely brand new experience for us, too, and we’re really happy to be working on this. And we’re really looking forward to the day when we can bring you this new story from CLAMP, and the day when we can meet our fans face-to-face to hear what you think about Mangettes!” “Dark Horse has made original comics for over twenty years; our editors have seen the hard work of individual Japanese creators in every manga we’ve ever brought over. Now we’re going to work just as hard to meet the trust CLAMP has placed in Dark Horse to publish their original work,” explains Mike Richardson, president and founder of Dark Horse. “Thanks to CLAMP, Dark Horse is today a manga publisher in a complete sense. After two decades of experience in adapting licensed editions of manga released previously by Japanese publishers, we will now become the original publisher of CLAMP, creators at the top of the manga world.” Soon to come, details on CLAMP’s exciting new story. |

Cool. I've always liked clamp, though some of their more recent works (see Tsubasa and xxxholic) have seemed flat and longwinded to me.
I've always wanted a true sequel to Cardcatpor Sakura, though that probably won't happen as long as Tsubasa is running, so I'll be interested to see what CLAMP comes up with this time. Has a simultaneous release like this ever happened before? I mean, on the anime side anyway, if anything were to get a release like that, it'd be the Evangelion movies, and I haven't even heard news about those being licensed (though I can't imagine that ADV will wait all that long before pouncing on them). I know Death Note was sort of like that, but it was more like a "we're starting to release it in the US while it's still going on in Japan" and not a "we're releasing them at the time time" type thing like what this sounds like it is. |

I'm very curious to see how this will be handled. Also to see if more titles will perhaps be released this way. A simultaneous release from Dark Horse x CLAMP will be very interesting indeed.

I beginning to doubt that Clamp will ever finish Legal Drug and X/1999 . It seems like they start on a new series but don't like to finish off their older ones.

Wow. I'm still not sure what to think about CLAMP and Dark Horse teaming up but my initial reaction is, interest. I'm not surprised that CLAMP would be the ones to take on the challenge like this.
I don't ever recall a manga being released at the same time. It might be because popularity hasn't been established, and here in America, they're waiting to see if it's worth to gain the rights to. I guess it was a wise move on Dark Horse's part since CLAMP is so established in the manga world. It's something to definitely keep an eye on. |

I wonder if this means that xxxHOLiC and Tsubasa are nearing a conclusion.
Also, with complete creative control, one wonders how CLAMP will decide to do things for the American market. |

Oooh, yay I say. :3 I'm quite eager for plot details on the new story. However, I don't want them to stop Tsubasa and xxxHolic in favor of the new title like they've done with their other works. XP (I'm a rare CLAMP fan that likes Tsubasa and xxxHolic better than their older stuff...)

Simul release~! CLAMP~! <3
This is the happiest day eva~! Sure the idea won't happen for a while but its good to see that times are changing~ :3 ...when Japan won't be two years running ahead of us in manga and anime. The day that all my manga are simul released is the day I completely dissown scanlations. I'd SO subscribe to a magazine to get the chapters at the same time as the Japanese version. I LOVE CLAMP manga and read everything they put out so Dark Horse has me signed up for this~ Give CLAMP complete control~! ... are they MAD~! LOL~! I can't wait to see it~! <3 It's gonna be so much more than awesome |

This means xxxHolic and Tsubasa Chronicle will be over by 2009 since I doubt CLAMP would want to add another major title while they are already doing two.

As am I. 80 pages of original material a month is a hella workload, even among 4 artists and their assistants... |

Before this was announced, CLAMP had pretty much said that Tsubasa and xxxHOLiC were beginning to come to an end. I think Tsubasa is at vol. 19 in Japan now, and is expected to be 23 volumes, and lately CLAMP have been producing about four volumes of it a year. And xxxHOLiC I think was always planned to end around the same time. So both of those will finish next year, and not because of this new project.
Not sure when X/1999 will start up again as it wasn't just put on hiatus. CLAMP and the publishers decided to hold off as there had been some things in the manga that hit a little close to home in Japan, and CLAMP refused to change the ending they had planned, so they did the hiatus to ensure they didn't have to alter the ending (More info here - http://www.manganews.net/forums/showthread.php?t=1736) |

With Legal Drug, the company that published the work went bankrupt, so they had no choice but to stop it there. With X, the content had become quite graphic (depicting an earthquake IIRC) and in light of a then-recent earthquake in Japan, it was decided to put the title on hiatus for a bit. That's how Tsubasa and xxxHOLiC got started. In many ways, I wouldn't be surprised if both those titles were wrapped up by year's end. |
