Quote: | I can't tell if Love of Kill is trying to be an edgy romantic comedy with hitmen or some kind of mystery show set in a dark, unforgiving society. |
Having read some fantranslated chapters of the source manga, I'd say it's both. It's a mix of dark mystery, edgy romance, sinister dealings and brief comedic moments.
Even the magazine it publishes in,Monthly Comic Gene, is a demographic-defying magazine that mainly features shonen-themed stories marketed for female readers.

The dissonance is part of the charm I think, but it can get a bit much at some points. As far as questionable romances with rancid guy's go, I'd say raise wa tanin ga ii was a more fun experience for me with an even worse (affectionate) male lead, but love of kill does have a pretty enjoyable mystery-romance blend, it uses the romantic framing to distract the viewers from the more obvious questions about why Song is acting like this.

I don't recall much of anything that would lead me to label this a rom-com. Where was the comedy? Song was creepy to me off the bat, and his attempts at being light and charming made him even creepier, to hell with framing. Red flags all over him, even without knowing he's an assassin. If he came on to me like he did to her (barring the parking garage meeting, which was a 4-alarm category all its own), I'd be looking into a restraining order.
At any rate, I'm totally on board to see what happens.

Episode 2 was...better, I think. But I still feel like its held back by Chateau's blank stoicism, and Jim's....well, everything. The latter I've more or less accepted, but I think the former needs to be fixed sooner rather than later.
I'll give it one more episode to do so.

How many stoic blondes can Saori Onishi play?
I'm kind of curious how much Chateau will get to do since it seems like the main appeal of the series is Song vs. the other assassins and his interest in Chateau. We haven't really gotten a thorough display of how competent/effective she is.

She doesn't seem to be competent or effective at all. I think in every confrontation so far, of every type (except vs her boss), she's lost, hasn't she?

Totally Agree, if i had seen this show at AnimeNYC, i would have no idea what's going on. usually an Anime or Any show in general will try to sell it to you in the first 10-15 mins but after the first episode i had no idea what the plot was supposed to be. i think the first episode should have been a double.

I hated that they just killed the girl just after having her locked up with a corpse. If you want to kill off NPCs, just kill them off, or if they suffered enough just let them disappear from the story, don't torture them and then end them brutally anyway. It leaves a bad taste for me, like I'm watching suffering porn "but it's OK since they're not the main characters".
I like the look and design of the main characters, but they are too one-note so far, and the India guy without face is super annoying instead of funny. I'm gonna drop out form this series and catch up on other stuff.

Admittedly she was only able to get the drop on Song, although not for long, but she had no way of seeing that truck coming.

Well that episode was underwhelming in every way,,,,
I'm past caring about either of the MC's and they'll probably end up being taken out by their respective bosses anyway - so this is a drop from me....

I don't see that as counting, since getting the drop on him was the start of the confrontation. By the end of it, she'd lost.
I also wasn't impressed by her reaction to the truck. I'd expect better driving skills from someone in her profession, even with a blown tire. But that was technically the end of her first confrontation with the motorcycle assassin anyway, so it's still another loss -- one compounded by losing to him again in round two.
Ok, maybe I'm being a little hard on her, but women who fall down while being chased, which in entertainment media is like, all of them, always put me in a cranky mood.
I think I'm still not clear about that whole thing. Why did spiderweb guy go after her with apparently deadly intent in the first place, and then not kill her (or the truck driver) later? He already knew about Song's interest in her before he first shot at her. If his intent was to kill her passenger, I don't know why. I'm not even sure why he'd want to kill Chateau anyway. It wouldn't get him any closer to Song.

The whole "girls can't run without falling down" thing is one of my most hated tropes. It's insulting and never adds anything new or interesting to the chase scenes.

This story does have an issue with Chateau constantly not being able to resolve fights on her own and having to be rescued in the end and that's never going to get better. It's one of my main criticisms of the manga even if she's got some decent moments and it makes me wish they hadn't had her as a hitman at the start (even if she was a newbie) since her being a civilian with maybe some gun training but no on field experience would make her clumsiness more understandable
That being said, faulting her for not being top form when she was abruptly jumped by a stranger and survived getting truck'd off a cliff is kind of odd.

Well, the guy chasing her had just been smashed against a rockface by a ton of skidding steel and then had to make his way down the cliff to get to her, and yet he never fell down while catching up to her. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

Barrelling off a cliff still seems worse to me, but maybe that's just me.
