I think the most intriguing thing about this announcement is who'll be doing the script. The film's scriptwriter, Chihiro Ito, previously did the scripts for the films Crying out Love, in the Center of the World (aka Socrates in Love, in the English adaptation of the original novel) and Spring Snow (Haru no Yuki, the recent film version of the Mishima novel).
I'm not sure how this'll match with Oshii's sensibilities, but it could provide an interesting tension. |

I hope it'll add something different than The Cockpit.

Speaking of dogfighting anime, it's work noting that Oshii's early mentor in the anime industry was Hisayuki Toriumi, who directed the original Area 88.

Well I don't know if this is the first announcement on ANN or not. But it is the first I have heard of it. And it sounds right up my alley. Can't wait!

I'm not familar with the source work. Is this a WW II setting, or alternate universe, or live aerial wargamers in the modern day, or what? (^_*)

Well, it's probably best if you don't know about the original source imo, since the statement in the press release is saying that Oshill is "distancing" himself from the source material to "create a more entertaining work".
More info about the title is in the press statement link above. Translation: This is a movie loosely based on the source material. We're letting you know now so that you don't complain later. |

One site thought that the original work was similar to Ender's Game. Here is a description in Chinese that I found.
The original looked wonderful from the exerpt on a retailer site above. Hopefully, it won't be turned into a sappy love story. |

Oshii is my favorite director next to Kurosawa. I've been waiting for this announcentment since he lasted did an anime. Like I said earlier, 2007 has been a great year for fans.[/code]

I think Oshii has a somewhat broader conception of what a love story is than many directors. I personally felt the varieties of love were certainly under discussion in Innocence. |

I agree, and this is also why I think it's a more interesting SF film than the original, in that it has less emphasis on advanced technology per se, and more on how people look with it. |

Carl: I liked both films, but I'll agree that the sequel added some humanism which the original lacked. What I appreciate about the first film was the way that Oshii was able to condense the techie concepts in Shirow's manga, since they tended to be more masturbatory than the actual hentai. Plus Shirow tends to recycle his futuristic cop content, and I really couldn't tell the difference between the characters in GITS and those in Appleseed.
