Really hyped for this game! I never really got into the first three rune factories (mostly because of an inability to date guys) but I picked up 4S on steam and fell in love with it. While I haven't had the time to play it much, I'm definitely picking up 5 day 1 since honestly a new Rune Factory is insane to see in general (4 came out in 2012!). The addition of same sex marriage to the localization only adds to my excitement.

The inclusion of Doug in RF5 as a non-datable NPC, now that you can finally romance other guys with a male avatar (without invoking pronoun-confused genderflip shenanigans on NG+, anyway), is incredibly bittersweet.
But I am still hyped, and I still expect to play through this one at least 4 times (if you know what I mean ). Visuals and gameplay look to be a huge step up from 4S, which was good but really hurt by the lack of a second screen. |

You failed to mention an important detail in your review. It's something that some games in the series have and some don't and is the deciding factor that determines whether I buy it or not.
Does time stop when you go indoors? These games always have so much to do in so limited time that I always find myself frantically running around trying to get as much done as quickly as possible all while the clock ticks away in the background and it makes every second of the game feel like the last two minutes of a Metroid game so without the ability to duck into a nearby building, take a breather and enjoy a little bit of the game without the demonic clock hounding me like MR X in the RE:2 Remake the game just ends up being more stressful than fun. I was worried about this game to be honest. I do play a lot of Rune Factory, but I never really got into the other Harvest Moon game. And with the whole Harvest Moon turning into Story of Seasons, and lot of production stuff that I really don't understand. I can't tell the difference between Natsume and Marvelous, I never can keep up with this behind the scenes stuff... All I know is as long as the game keeps the core gameplay, adds interesting new mechanics that'll keep me busy, and likable villagers, I'm game.

This is really neat but also kinda weird, I don't think I've ever heard of a video game doing something like this? At least none that I can think of immediately |

Rune Factory 5 did poorly in Japan. It was a huge step back from 4 and a lot of fans hated it because of the lack of content, bad performance, and numerous bugs. Xseed seems to have adopted the game, in a sense. They're the ones pushing for all the changes in the American version. This is probably just another push by them to add in commentary from the English voice actors. It's a very unconventional situation to see a game in. I guess Xseed is really pushing for this game to recoup its losses in America. |

That's actually a good question and not something I considered when I was trying the game out for the preview. Beg your pardon. I'll keep an eye out and let you guys know for the full review once that goes up. |

Deus Ex: Human Revolution Director's Cut & both Portal games also feature this, as well as some indie games. It's a neat concept for video games that I think should be attempted more often, personally. I'm always a fan of commentaries for movies, so I'd be up for more in games, too. |

HYPED!
I love this kind of game, and I’m so excited that same-sex marriage is an option! |

Do you have any sources for RF5 doing poorly? I only know that it sold 102853 physical copies in the first week. For comparison, RF4 sold 85955 copies on the 3DS in the first week. That does not sound poorly to me. |

Well selling poorly is not the same as being recieived poorly (it may have hyped up fans for being the first game in 9 years) but I'm not Japanese so I'm unable to provide a source. I really hope the game is good though personally |

I found a corporate Q&A (linked from JP Wikipedia), but it's in Japanese. It's all worded very politely, but the basic gist is that both Rune Factory 5 and Pioneers of Olive Town were not only both outsourced, but also released without sufficient QA, and that's just not a good look for a flagship IP. The reply is just that they're hiring a lot and working toward reorganizing internally to properly enable internal development and QA. (Editorial aside: RF5 is sort of tricky because it was produced by series creator Yoshifumi Hashimoto at his own studio, so the lack of QA makes Marvelous look especially bad.) A lot was apparently been fixed in a post-launch patch a few months back, so the yearlong wait for an international release is probably a blessing in disguise. The impression I've been getting is that the game itself is feature-rich and generally well-designed (so, it's fun), but a mess on a technical level. |

I've been keeping an eye on this for a while and the short of it is that if you are a Harvest Moon/Rune Factory fan, and especially if you're interested in the same-sex marriage aspect, this is the game to be playing.
There is jank, but it doesn't break the game. From all the research I've been doing, all of the major bugs have been stomped out and it looks like XSEED is at least attempting to further improve framerate and loading times. Twitch previews XSEED sent out the other day were looking pretty good/solid. If it launches as-is, my only main concerns are that there's occasionally a long loading screen, there's occasionally frame drops, and there's spots where draw distance and textures look a bit jank/garbage - but this is also pushing the Switch to its limits and looks to be fixed instantly if ever a PC/PS4 release happened. Personal gripes? They are in desperate need of a Hell difficulty mode but dont have one yet (make sure to play on Hard if you dont wanna steamroll stuff), and none of the interesting (female) characters are able to be romanced which is momentously dumb. Also I am poor/broke and cannot afford the Earthmate Ed. Otherwise, the main protag characters look great, there seems to be lots of good outfits, all of the ENG voices seem to match/pair well against their JP counterparts 9 out of 10 times, and same-sex couples even have their own special variety of child adoption on RF5. The setting of the game and supporting cast seem a bit more solid than recent outings.... If RF4 bothered you with its "I fell out of the sky, now I'm a princess and nobody questions it" story & it seemed a bit flimsy at the start, I'm happy to say RF5's more traditional RPG Guild-style "town watch association" setup feels like its grounding the plot fairly well. None of the tropes or odd narrative choices that caused me to return my copy of Tides of Destiny are afoot here. If you can get past the price and the fact that this is a Switch game and not currently announced for PC or PS4, every Harvest Moon/Rune Factory fan should probably be giving the game a serious look. |
