This is such a strange thing...
To begin with, the caramelldansen's "dance" meme itself originated from the opening theme footage of the popular 2002 eroge Popotan. So there's no way any subsequent media referencing the dance memes such as these "Caramella Girls" could ever be the origin or something that's "always been there." Who do they think they're fooling?

As someone who lived through Caramelldansen's rise in popularity in 2008 first hand (both as an active anime fan online, going to anime conventions & spending a lot of free time in college on youtube) yeah, jan Misali's right.

It was an interesting video.

If this is upheld, then Remixed Records will claim and control the narrative, even though it is essentially erasing what actually happened. It literally is taking credit for something when it is not theirs' to take.

Yeah, the fact that there's no consequence for abusing it is a huge problem with the platform.

If you want to keep an idea from being stolen, never let it out of your head. If you let it out, accept that you no longer control it. Copyright, like the police, was invented only to protect the rich.

update: I downloaded Misali's documentary video from nicovideo and uploaded it to my own Youtube channel just to see how far down the rabbit hole it goes. There was a warning of restricted monetization but no block or removal order. So, who knows? Even Youtube doesn't know how to equitably apply their own rules.

Oh, plenty of people, believe it or not. It's one of those things folks like us who were around for it remember and take for granted - but people casually hearing about it over the years get pointed to one of those 3D "original" labeled videos and think that's it.

Definitely enjoyed the documentary on Niconico. Sucks that the creator is being bullied and threatened with the Youtube copyright system to attempt to control the narrative regarding this meme song.

Hope they don't get away with it. Such a shady thing to do. Hate history erasure.

This is so wild lmao. Anyone who was selling at the time can tell you that the sped up version of the song passed around at the time was called "Speedycake" or "Speedycake remix". Truly embarrassing to see a company act like this.

Have to agree with the streisand effect, I didn't even know the remix had existed before the caramella girls version and in the process of them trying to censor the truth I found out lol

Seems like a rather crass attempt at trying to get people to associate a popular song with an unrelated act to prop up the latter. As he's the song's owner, that's probably not illegal.

Unless it's a case of "old man doesn't know how to internet," I'm not sure why he'd take that video down. None of the cash in follow-ups were particularly popular, so I don't think many would care that they were made by people unassociated with the original song. I know there's a language barrier involved, but he's been doing this for 10 years and it seems like the people who actually created the song don't care.

When are The Nyan Catgirls going to form and release a follow-up? I know the people who owned that YouTube channel tried rebranding it and uploading completely unrelated videos at one point.

This is a strange take since it’s not only the rich who rely on copyright protection.

It’s just the rich more commonly abuse it.
