Ok so Frederica didn't actually declare war against the everyone else when she was five, she just felt guilty for being part of the Imperial family that declared that war in the first place. It's a common misconception I see a lot, so I wanted to try and clear it up.

Also, glad you guys appreciate the smol gremlin. The mascot thing is unfortunately an old Giadian tradition, but fortunately the Federacy doesn't actually do it. It's more of an old Empire thing. Frederica just uses it as an excuse to tag along with the 86 because she wants to keep an eye on Shin. And I love how she uses the position to use herself as a hostage to force the Spearhead to come back alive rather than as a hostage for them to complete the mission.

I had a different impression of Lena's uncle, but someone correct me if I am wrong. Specifically, it doesn't feel like a person who isn't willing to reconsider what was done to the 86. For me, it seems he knows it is wrong, and if anything, considers San Magnolia being destroyed as a rightful outcome to their immoral actions. I got the impression that he is someone who knows there were better or moral ways, but was crushed by the sentiment and actions of the society he lives in, and he either gave up fighting against it or he was never strong enough to fight it to begin with. I especially felt this way, because of the line he says to Lena, about an adult's responsibility is to protect a child's dream (until they wake up and our crushed against reality).

The production delays combined with the complexity of the characters and their interactions, and the complexity of the politics have combined to decrease my interest in the anime, and tempt me to just read the novels --- at which time, the anime will be enjoyable for the way it illustrates the novels (I gather that readers of the series have been generally pretty pleased by the adaptation).

This is not a complaint --- I'll be happy if the animators are allowed to do work that pleases them in a way that pleases them (for pay that pleases them), and treating the anime as supplement to the books is probably fine with the publishers who are paying for the series.

I might be in the minority but I don't really miss Lena at all this cour. This one is about the 86 and it should be. The bits with Lena are fine but I was a little impatient to get through them so we could get back to the 86. Of course it was good to see what's going on with her and San Magnolia but I really want to follow the 86 and their story this cour. This show is just so damn good and like Steve and Nicky, I am feeling simultaneously disappointed in the delays while also understanding of the immense stress on the production team and wishing for their health and safety. Bottom line is that even with this delays this show is 1000% worth waiting for. If other shows had these delays I'm not sure I would bother catching up but this one? Yeah, I'll wait and be grateful for every episode.

This was my take on Karlstahl as well.

Likewise for me, and I felt that impression came across stronger here (where he gets an extra scene or two) than it did in the novels.

Otherwise, I felt that Nicky and Steve made a lot of excellent points that are mostly in line with my own evaluation of the series. While I have generally regarded the second and third novels' content (i.e., what's being animated this season) as the weakest part of the overall story, the animation has brought out quite effectively the transition from one kind of prejudice to another which lies at the heart of this part of the story, and I am pleased to see viewers recognizing that.

This one's in my Top 5 for the year for certain, and could be #1 if its finish is as strong as it has the potential to be.

Agreed, and I think this reinforces the point of Ernst acting as a foil for Karlstahl. Both were idealistic military men serving corrupt governments. (Don’t think the anime mentioned it but Ernst was a fairly high ranking commander in the Empires military) But whereas Karlstahl did nothing to change the Republic, believing it pointless and/or impossible, Ernst decided to lead a revolution to overthrow the Empire and replace it with a more just and noble nation. Whereas Karlstahl was content to do nothing and let the Republic reap the consequences of their actions, Ernst was willing to destroy the Empire for his ideals and is even now willing to destroy all of humanity himself if they ever throw away their, and his, ideals.
