I wouldnt go to see just ANY old anime in theaters. My mentality would not be "OMG ANIME is playing, I will go see it!"
But if an anime I was actually interested in seeing came out? Heck yeah.

i think the problem would come do they watch it subbed or dubbed in the theaters. i'd be an experience thats for sure. i'd do it once or twice if it was something i wanted to really see.

Had anyone ever done something like that before? Anime dazed

In the US/North America? I don't think so, hell I really only want to see titles I really want to see. I am having a hard enough time trying to see Paprika a second time in theaters. I had some hopes that it would actually get a decent opening but it appears to be nothing but art house type theater. I mean I saw Appleseed in a decent size theater that was located in the mall.

I had to pick that third option, although I can't believe that would ever actually be an option.
If that wouldn't have been a choice however, I probably would have picked, "count me in."
Of course, this assumes that they would show anime that would have appeal to a broad audience, and frankly, even if it didn't have broad appeal, as long as it wasn't something I really couldn't stand (like Gundam) I would go see it to support more anime getting a chance at screenings in the future. That and I do like watching most anime. Wink

Should be an option for people who have already seen anime in theaters. I've seen the theatrically released Pokemon movies, the Digimon movie(s), and the last three US released Ghibli movies (Mononoke, Spirited Away, and Howl's) in theaters. I think that's seven times right there (though I saw the first Pokemon movie and Digimon twice so nine times Embarassed ).

I ended up going with the option that Dormcat quoted above. I believe some companies like Funimation and others have done special theater screenings of their TV shows. If it was a full fledged event I probably would go to something like that given the opportunity, but in just any ol' theater probably not.

Wasn't that what "Trinity Blood: The Movie" was? The first volume's worth of episodes or so?

Anyway, I saw Howl's Moving Castle when it was in theaters and it was AMAZING. The movie's beautiful even on DVD, but nothing can really compare to seeing it in a theater. If I get another oppertunity, I'd definantely do it again. I'm hoping I'll get a chance with Paprika.

Actually now that I think about it Gilgamesh was also screened it was the first volume only and it was in the Alamo theater or something. But that was a one time event held by ADV for people to meet the Voice Actors, not a nationwide event.

Only for a very select few movies that I was very, very interested in. If, for example, Nausicaa of the Valley of the Wind had been shown in theaters before it was released on DVD, I probably would have made time to go see it. I can't think of anything else that I would have done that for, though.

I picked "No" under the assumption that anime in theatres would always be the dubbed version.

Good point. I was about to vote because 5cm is about to premiere in Taiwan this summer (subbed, of course), but your post made me to hesitate. After all, the majority of mentalities of this website are North American. I shall not vote unless there are better options.

Been there, done that.
Escaflowne, Cowboy Bebop, Spirited Away & Howl's

So it's dubbed. Still has the same animation. The big-screen experience is worth it. One can always buy the dvd & watch it subbed. If you know the VA's (Tomokazu Seki, Joji Nakata in Escaflowne, the Bebop cast), one can sort of hear them doing it.

I don't know about you, but for me, the animation only constitutes half the experience.

I've actually seen more anime sub in theaters then I have dubbed, but in the end it doesn't matter to me. Be dub or sub the title I seen won't be one of the shows where the dub and sub are different. There's only been a few cases for I've refused to listen to a dub, so I am alright with either. But I assumed that the question is probably referring to dub titles, since were talking about America and people can't read and watch at the same time. Rolling Eyes

If it wre something that I was interested in, then yeah I would go support it and watch it in the theaters. AMC, a big theater chain, has actually shown some ainime m their theaters. I believe the second ghosh in the shell movie was shown in a big AMC theater and it was subbed. I know that one of the biggest AMC theaters in Houston,TX is having a special event night on June the 6th for the first Naruto movie, and its being shown in english.

There was another thaeater in Houston too that had a special showing of the Full Metal Alchemist movie in English to.
