I believe so unless there on a phone with mobile windows. And are downloading via torrent or whatever Japan is using nowadays. Now if only I could have a cool phone that did that. darn razor.... |

This survey sounds pretty whacky. They took a cell phone survey and determined 40% of customers had used manga downloads. I'm willing to bet those with cell phones are a lot more likely to download manga than those who don't have cell phones.

It's kind of like polling the nation via phone when only 65% of the people in the country have phone, that happened a long time ago. |

The mobile phone penetration rate in Japan is actually around 80%, depending on the study. It was 74% in 2005, with a projected 4% annual increase before tapering at around 86% in 2010. http://www.researchandmarkets.com/reportinfo.asp?report_id=344544 http://www.cellular-news.com/story/17162.php |

This is a great market considering that Japan loves manga over anime. Pretty interesting. What else is interesting is that Japan is doing a lot of surveys involving anime and manga.

Wow 80%? So those figures are actually worth looking at, I figured that it would be in the mid sixty. I actually like to see how many people buy mobile games or want to buy video games via phone. Considering how major companies like Square Enix are putting exclusive titles like Parasite Eve 3 (why God why!) I wonder where the manga market (mobile that is) compare to video games. |

Oh, the video game market isn't AS big as the manga market, but it's big. And the cell phone penetration rate is immense also. 1st graders will often bring cell phones to school. Why a first grader needs a phone is beyond me, but it happens frequently. I was on IGN the other day and I saw the advertisement about being able to watch TV on your cell phone, and how people were acting like it was the coolest thing ever. That technology has been here in Asia for years. |

Hopefully the manga producers will actually pay attention to the poll and start offering more of their manga for direct download straight from their site, or offer them on DVD....
Polls are useless unless the results from the polls are acted upon. With such clear results as these, this should be a new market for most manga houses, and could probably save them from their otherwise pending doom... |

5,400? for a country with a +125m population? That's nothing.

Softbank (a cellphone company) has been promoting manga downloads for their 3G phones quite visibly on tv and in trains lately, so it is no surprise that people are aware of the service. The selection seems really nice, too.
The popularity of the service is no surprise, what with so many people commuting on trains for more than an hour a day. |

Also, considering the weekly, monthly, etc anthology-type manga collections seem to fit more into the disposable media category in Japan-like newspapers to be discarded after reading. Why not download? No recycling.
