You can pretty much conclude that every Progressive Novel will be adapted as a Movie from this stage as long as their is material to adapt and money to be made.

Say what you want about SAO, but it truly is one of the biggest, and the most influential anime ever.
It wouldn't surprise me if it actually starts expanding as much as Gundam.

I’m a little confused by this. The title of the next movie is “ Scherzo of a Dark Dusk” which is similar to the title of Progressive Volume 4: “Scherzo of Deep Night” while the title for the second part of volume 1(after Aria of a Starless Night) is “Rondo for a Fragile Blade”. So are the Progressive movies skipping ahead to volume 4? Is this a new, Progressive movie original story unrelated to the novels? Or are they just using a different title for the second part of volume 1 that just happens to be similar to the title for volume 4?

I'm glad I'm not very heavily invested in SAO, otherwise I'd be too pissed off about this to laugh at the absolute irony of Kawahara writing a novel series that covers every floor instead of skipping like in the original, only for Aniplex to skip floors in the anime adaption anyway.

Nice! Love some more SAO
though the one of the few downsides i see for myself now is the price. This is the only aniplex series i buy on blu ray and it already costs me over 1300 bucks from season 1 limited editions to war of the underworld.

For wondering why some volumes are being skipped, Kawahara himself sheds some light on twitter:
Quote: | Those who have read the novel might be asking, "Where did Rondo, Concerto, and Barcarolle go?"; due to the Elf War Quest not yet being completed, among other concerns, it was decided to animate "Scherzo" next. I believe that it will surely become a satisfying experience, so I hope that receive your continued support for the series! |

I can understand it from that perspective but it just feels weird to be jumping around again when the whole point of Progressive is the gradual, floor-by-floor, progression and how each floor develops Kirito, Asuna, and their relationship as well as introducing more elements about the clearers and the world of SAO.
I guess I would feel less worried if I wasn't already concerned about the 1st movie with the existence of Mito and how Argo seemingly isn't even going to appear at all. I'm not sure if they know what they're doing adaption-wise.
Also anime fans deserve to see Kizmel.

This is something I don't really understand. Like, I didn't like SAO and I'm not into these movies....but the whole thing prints money. They could just dedicate a movie to each piece of source material and rake in the cash so why DONT they do that? Skipping stuff just sounds like missing an opportunity to make cash

They're releasing these one a year tops, the elf quest chain is several books in. How much is he going to milk this plot line that the movies could possibly catch up

I pretty much lost my hype for these films once they revealed this film would be covering Volume 4. Like what is even the point of adapting this series if you are gonna skip entire volumes of content. And even Kawahara's tweet makes no sense to me. So he wants to keep the whole Elf quest line together? Wasn't it revealed that the quest wouldn't be completed till they got to Floor 10? 8 Volumes into Progressive and they have just cleared Floor 7. Even ignoring the elf quest, you are also gonna be skipping character development for Kirito and Asuna that was present on Floors 2-4. This entire idea just sounds bad.

Despite the fact that some volumes might be skipped for now, I'm still looking forward to this movie. And besides whose knows, they might go back and do the Elf Wars stuff once it's fully completed.

Dude, just know your not the only one who's lost hype for any of this.
I shrugged when they added a film exclusive character, but now they want to skip volumes? Skipping two volumes to go to the 4th doesn't make alot of sense, especially considering so many things are built up in those volumes that lead directly into the group conflicts on the 4th floor. So much context is going to be missing here, so much character development is going to go unseen...
Argo's short story "Reason for the Whiskers" is one of my favorite chapters in the series, and that alone would have gotten me to watch the 2nd movie, IF the 2nd movie was about the 2nd floor. This has all turned into such a huge bummer for me at this point.
