I guess us non-owning PS3 owners are pretty much screw seeing as how Blue-Ray looks like it's going to win the war. I must say I am exciting to see some of the titles in Blue Ray/HD-DVD, I wonder how much they will cost considering their pricing plan on normal dvds
 .

Well since Freedom DVD 1 is $40. These are going to run at least $60.00 and up.
FYI Bandai' s new marketing plan is to release in North America and Japan at the same time. Also, unless it specifically says there is a dub don't assume there will be one. Not anymore.

I guess no one does marketing to see what people buy and why, I don't know if BV thinks that the people who buy Dubs are the minority but it's actually the other way around...most casual fans want dubs, even I want a dub most of the time with my releases, but I guess not with most of BV releases. One last thing Steamboy and Jin-roh have dub tracks I wonder why it's not listed, I mean hopefully it's just an error on BV website. |

The price listed on Anime on DVD was ¥10,290, or about $85. None of these are titles I'm really willing to rebuy for that much money so I'll probably be waiting until/if they're released domesticly (and I have a player to play them).

I think it's more that they researched teh sort of consumer that buys immediately, regardless of the price, and is likely to import it. That's where the money is made, not in the later add-on sales, especially for older titles.
I suspect that it's mostly true of the Japanese market, and their strategy seems focused on keeping the US pricing from undercutting the Japanese pricing, while satisfying the most hardcore otaku on this side of the pond as well. They're aiming at the narrowest band of the market, who tend to spend more anyway. It may help to think of these releases as being like the Criterion Collection -- they typically cost more but are of higher quality and presented with the target audience of hardcore anime (or film) junkies, rather than the broader consumer market. |

I suspect that these titles are aimed mainly at the Japanese market. Also there has been word recently about creators of anime expressing concern over how their titles are handled. Since the title listed are by pretty big names in the industry, it may be that hey want their work given the arthouse treatment rather than the commercial run. Most anime goes inot the hands of big publishers and the creators have nothing to do with it after that, but I suspect Oshii and Otomo may have some say in how their work is released.

Oh my, whatever gave it away? The fact that the website link given is Japanese, or that it's Bandai Visual Japan confirming Blu Ray and HD-DVD dates? Jeezus, people, anytime that "Bandai Visual" pops up, regardless of whether it's their Japanese company or U.S. branch, there is guranteed bitching with a smarmy remark thrown in for good measure. I'm not asking for praise for them as their "no English dub and ten dollars higher than the limit" policy is ridiculous, but to constantly whine about them? Yeesh. |

It is true that BV Japan is also a bit expensive. The Blu-Ray release of Iblard Jikan is 4700 Yen. Brave Story is 4743. Paprika is 5695. Project Papo is 6800 Yen, Innocence is 7800. Bandai Visual movies are about twice the price of the average anime title. In general Japanese Blu-Rays are only a little more expensive than the standard DVD release.
Likewise with almost all of the domestic Blu-Ray titles costing between $20-24 at Amazon I have completely given up on buying standard definition non-anime DVDs. |

you all who say it is targeted at the Japanese market are forgetting one thing.
The region coding for Blu-ray have Japan in region 1. And HD-DVD doesn't have region coding. This means there is no pseudo regional barrier to reverse importing (in either direction) in the new formats. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Blu-ray_Disc#Region_codes http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/HD_DVD#Digital_rights_management Personally I see the new formats eventually causing a price change in the Japanese market once other groups start including Japanese subtitles on American DVD releases. Shipping charges are pretty much irrelevant as more than one company out there offers free shipping. |
