Does it still have the "cool combo" system where you have to input attacks in a rhythm that constantly speeds up in order to do decent damage (which has no visual indicator I know of in the original, so you have to do a weird training mode for it from the main menu)? Or the mud men you have to kill with a specific combo that the game never properly tutorializes? Those are two of my most hated parts of any 3D action game.
Either way, a $60 remake of a game whose original selling point was costing 2,000 yen is a tough sell.

Well, Origin is technically a remake of the first two games, so the original cost would have been 4,000 yen, which makes it a bit more fair of a cost. That being said, I'll still wait for a sale of some sort, or at least a physical release (which this doesn't look to have, at the moment). I remember playing a bit of the Wii game (which is the fourth entry, technically) & enjoyed its simple-minded gameplay, so I've been interested in getting this remake.

I love how this whole review's just precursored with "Look, we all know this is trash, so let's move on" Laughing

If that's all you got out the review, then you literally didn't read the entire thing, since Grant states (multiple times) that he did enjoy the game, very much so at points. Yes, it's simplistic (not surprising, since it's a remake of two Simple 2000 Series games originally for the PS2) & has its flaws, but when you hit that groovein the gameplay you have a lot of fun with it, and it doesn't overstay its welcome in any way, because it's not a long game to get through.

I think Grant was more than fair in reviewing an Oneechanbara game here, because it's never tried to be anything more than what it aims to be. Much like fellow Simple Series expat Earth Defense Force, you'll either enjoy Oneechanbara for what it is, or you'll hate it for being as simplistic as it is.

Yes, the Cool Combo system is still in place and I thought it was a solid way to resolve fights rather quickly. The mud men are better tutorialized (or perhaps I should say, it was clear to ME how to defeat them, I don't have the original for frame of reference).

I do feel $60 is a steep price tag for the game, no matter how you slice it (ha!).

Wow is this a remake of two games? I'm worried now the save glitch I was running into kept me from seeing content that may have unlocked after. I will look into this and get back to you.

I genuinely hope that wasn't the vibe that came across.

Okay this comment was very encouraging, I wanted to make it clear that while the game seems sort of trashy at first glance, there's a lot going on here even if it is lacking in some mechanical refinement (which I assume they worked out in later entries).

I am disappointed, but I expected it. This review lacked any mention of the perfection that is Lei. Redesigned by the great Katsumi Enami. Especially with the DLC costumes making her go beyond perfection.

Sorry, I didn't realize anyone would want me editorializing on my favorite characters Laughing I feel like I subject people to a lot of that already on twitter haha. But yes, Lei's design is something special.
