I voted for Escaflowne, Outlaw Star, Twelve Kingdoms, Wolf's Rain, Kill La Kill and Princes Tutu. Werid that every single one got picked, was I the only person voting.

Maybe? I never even saw the poll. But I can't say I mind--you've got excellent taste.

To this day I regard Twelve Kingdoms, unfinished though it may be, as one of the all-time greats--and if Wolf's Rain and Escalowne don't quite measure up to the same degree, at the very least, they're quite close.

Hah! My dad totally felt the same way about the art style the first time he watched this about ten years back. "Allen! Be careful with that kiss, you could puncture her face!"

My only experience with Escaflowne is via hbi2k's Abridged Series, but even so, these reviews are definitely ones I'm looking forward to.

Loved this show, it's a shame the ending got rushed, it especially messed up the spoiler[Hitomi x Van love aspect, which just kinda happen because the plot demand it.]

You can blame that on executive mandate. Escaflowne was meant to be 39 episodes, but got cut down to 26, and Kazuki Akane, the director, wound up needing to cut a lot of things as a result.

I haven’t watched this show in over twenty years (creeeeeak), but it holds up real well.
Hitomi is well fleshed out as a heroine - she gets scared but she’s good under pressure and direct AF about her sempai. I love how she vanishes and people know she’s gone - it adds something compared to modern day isekai.

I remember not liking Merle, but she’s fun here. As Rebecca notes, it’s probably because she is way more cat than most cat girls.

That opening still satisfies all these years later; I love Yoko Kanno.

Really strong start to a good series. It moves FAST.

I binged the uncensored original dub of this last year. It had been almost two decades, but it still holds up very well!

I looove this series, and seeing this review makes me want to marathon the whole thing again. It's been a very long time since I've given it a watch.

I'm so happy this was picked! Vision of Escaflowne is still my favorite anime of all time.

I watched Escaflowne shortly after the Kickstarter was announced, so I could decide if it was worth chipping in a few dollars, but I ended up donating a lot because I liked it so much.

Everything- the atmosphere, the artwork, the music- really stand out. The blend of shoujo and shounen elements also make the show pretty remarkable; you can make solid arguments as to whether this is a super-pretty shounen Mecha show, or a gritty version of a shoujo romance story, and they're both not wrong. Either way, it works.

btw Rebecca (I dunno if you're reading this but I'll try this anyway) what version of Escaflowne are you watching: the sub, the original dub, or the new dub?

Great series. My plates a bit full now (and I'm trying to chip away at my backlog), but I'm going to at least keep reading the reviews. Though that will probably tempt me to rewatch it anyway Laughing

I remember watching this but I don't remember anything that happened in the show. I've seen too much anime since then.

The sub, mostly because of Seki Tomokazu as Van. Smile It's also the nostalgia of that being the way I first saw the series.
