You aren't kidding. The My Little Ponies had a TV special where ponies were turned into some kind of hellbeasts and another one where an evil cat woman enslaved bushwoolies to make her drugs, and the Care Bears straight up raised the dead in their second movie. My mother brought this and another Unico movie home for my sisters and I when we were something like six, four, and two (I was the six), and it well and truly messed us up. I don't remember being as traumatized by this one as I was by the other one where all the people turned into blocky wooden doll-golems that the bad guy used to build something, though. |

Aw, man, Unico. Had the dubbed movies decades ago. I eventually read the Unico manga that DMP released, and was shocked and delighted to see how it differed from the movie. In the manga Baron Ghost was a grumpy animal hater and hunter, and Chao was in danger because if he learned she was a cat he would kill her. So all the crazy stuff in the end--his date-rape hypnotism, the possessed animals, the haunted forest, Baron Ghost turning into a cross between Chernabog and the Nightmare King, him burning up in a river of lava--was invented for the film. I really want to know what was going through the minds of the people who saw this grumpy old coot with a gun and decided "Eh, let's make him vampire Satan."
Hopefully there'll be a TWiA for Unico in the Island of Magic--or as my brother called it, Toy Story from Hell. |

Remember seeing this Movie (and it's sequel) on The Disney Channel one of my Earliest Memories of Anime.

Loved seeing this article on the first movie! I'm a big Unico fan and wish they made more of this property. Only now Tezuka is making some merchandise as they realize how cute he is. I hope that you guys review movie 2! And maybe check out the pilot too Black Cloud, White Feather.
Also going on dark 80s stuff check out The Last Unicorn 1982 as well. But as mentioned above, Firefly's adventure/Rescue at Midnight Castle from MLP is very dark too, but highly recommend. |
