Yikes! I certainly hope that PA's legal department hunted over their contract with a fine tooth comb because I've read Disticor's FAQ and it's hoplessly vague about their responsibilities to you but is happy to list all the different ways they can charge you fees and force returns on you. I'm not allowed into the inner workings of such things, but I will say that the magazine I work for signed a distribution deal with Disticor and then went web-only a month later. Read into that what you will.
Best of luck, though. PA's a great magazine that's been around for a dog's age, so here's hoping this is a good move, though I (obviously) have my doubts. |

Returns are an unfortunate reality of the book distribution market. We fully expect more than half the copies we ship to Disticor to be "returned" (industry average is that 66% get returned, but we've done some tweaking to aim for a lower return rate). Disticor has been distributing PA in Canada for years. Obviously this can blow up in our face if, say, 90% of the copies shipped to Disticor are returned. But you need to take the risk in order to grow in the magazine market. Good choice going web-only. Trying to make a living off of selling print magazines is like trying to make a living off of selling carbon monoxide. -t |

Not to disapprove you, but... carefully controlled dose of carbon monoxide is an inducer of heme oxygenase 1, one of the most important cellular secondary messenger and very beneficial against inflammatory and cardiovascular disorders due to its anti-inflammatory effects. Just my two cents. |

Great, we need it. Now try making a living selling it. I'm not saying that magazines are unwanted, if that's how I felt I wouldn't bother with PA. Nor am I saying that profit can't be made off a magazine. I'm sure there are hundreds of magazines out there turning a profit. But... there are tens of thousands of magazines out there. My purpose with PA is not to make money selling the magazine, if the magazine brings in enough money to pay its staff and cover the costs of publication, that satisfies my financial goals for PA. My primary goals are non-financial. But how many magazine publishers can say that? I'm guessing that the owners of the publication that jgreen works at were trying to turn a profit. -t |
