having recently just rewatched dxd in its entirety as an anime because there's a lot of spare time with the plague ou there, I'm wondering how it's not classified as a hentai. It really is pretty much a hentai over an ecchi when you compare it to other things in the genre

It's only hentai if the sex is explicit.

there are scenes that are pretty much sex scenes though. It's not so much as to deride the series, but damn comparing it to a lot of the other listings here...
also its light novel illustrator draws for hentai games. I sometimes read through the books and thought some of the proportions definitely look too suspect and went to go find out

I mean, technically, nothing's really "classified" as hentai in Japan. That usage of the word is primarily a Western term, lol.
Anyway, DxD is not hentai at all. There are plenty of anime, manga, and light novels that feature "sex scenes" or erotic imagery and situations, but that does not make them hentai. Depending on the publisher, authors are often given free reign to push the boundaries of their stories as far as they want, but until there are clear illustrated genitals it doesn't cross the line as far as classifications are concerned. The requirements for a work to be marked R18 are as simple as that.
As long as it's not R18, the titles are free to go as far as they can, at the discretion of the creators and publisher. DxD is a big title for Fantasia Bunko just like the others being featured in this game, so it's only natural to be featured among them.

Artists who have a history with adult content get work in all-ages publications all the time. You'll find such artists even in shonen manga magazines like Jump. It's even more prevalent among light novel illustrators.

A sex scene in anime doesn't make it hentai any more than a sex scene in live action makes it porn
Anyway, it will be interesting to see if it leaves Japan. I'm pretty sure all these titles have been animated and brought west (with some of their manga/light novels coming over too), so it's not like there might not be an audience for it.

There a whole lot of talent at work here.
Although, I would really like a continuation from high school dxd from slashdog(those light novels really do get good in story).

Lol, Issei hasn't had sex in the LNs yet. How can it be considered as hentai?

Sadly, that is probably the case. Chasing trends means it's pretty hard to pull an audience from already established games. While this has properties that I would actually enjoy somewhat, it would be up against things like Fate GO and there is a good chance it won't survive long enough to make a Western debut.

Maybe it's just me but the choice of titles are pretty old school.

Yeah, I log in daily for a bunch of games for the log in bonuses so I can do summons and what not, but I really only play 1 regularly and 2 others more casually. I'd really have to dedicate time to start a new game.
