It may be due to this being the Shikinami version of Asuka vs the original Soryu version. While similar there are some differences between the portrayals and may lead towards a subset of the fandom appreciating the character differently. |

Yay! Finally! I'm happy for Asuka taking the hot spot after so many years. Well, honestly I'd be even happier if Misato were higher in the ranking. The fact that a female character, with her flaws and virtues, got more votes instead of a fetishized "doll" lacking anything resembling her own personality is a great victory for the appreciation of the depiction of real girls vs idolized sexual icons of extremely submissive girls in anime scopes. Being righteous, the disproportionate and undeserved highlight that Rei has had over all those years is not an issue that stems from the anime of Evangelion itself (as hinted in The End of Evangelion in which Asuka is reborn as an empowered and scene-stealer deuterprotagonist) but rather from the otaku fandom, especially those obsessed with having every single female main charecter being a expressionless yamato nadeshiko woman. So yes, I blame those years of undeserved popularity for Rei and gladly welcome more recognition to our imperfect but definitely more interesting Asuka! There's hope dor a better and healthier future fandom!
