So weird....My favorite anime of all time (Phi Brain: Puzzle of God) had its first season streamed episodes and dvds/blu-rays removed from Sentai Filmwork's website as well as other online retailers like Rightstuf anime, yet the sub remains on Crunchyroll. It is also missing in Sentai's catalog section (only the 2nd and 3rd series are still up).
The second and third season are both available to be watched (dub and sub for season 2 and sub for season 3 since it wasn't ever dubbed).
I'm kind of bummed because I know Phi Brain didn't do that well, but I was really hoping for a 3rd season dub and it looks like Sentai is just quietly letting the license go out of print. They didn't even make the 3rd season available to buy on blu-ray or dvd.
Don't know when this went down, since I hadn't checked in a while, but I feel like they should have announced it.
But hey, that's just me.

I'm curious what happened. I actually checked a while back to see if those OVA episodes had shown up and all it had were videos for the extras. There weren't any episodes though.
My guess is that it ended up being too costly to renew. They promoted it fairly heavily compared to most shows, and produced some extra features for it, but the fairly quiet physical release of just a standard version (no limited edition) makes me think it didn't do as well as they expected.

It's a recent series. Is there a possibility they just have to reupload it or something? I'm not sure how it works, just speculating. With Aniplex titles excepted it really looks like they don't let go of recent licenses that easy (unless something has content that falls "outside their standards")...

Yeah, but I doubt this has anything to do what they did [with Interspecies Reviewers], lol. (Unless one actually saw the entirety of Drifters if it had any suggestive content, which by the key art, looks kinda action-y. Though the series being TV-MA from Funi's product page for their home video release doesn't say much.)
From the posters mention, yeah, it could probably the licencse was either too costly, some streaming goof on their platform, or it didn't do well to either just pull it entirely. (Even though its still being sold on home video though.)

As soon as I saw that Sgt. Frog was removed I checked myself and yep, it’s gone. Did they lose their license?

I don't see a single mention of Sgt. Frog on their site anymore so I'm guessing they're done with it. Bummer, but the poster who said they've done nothing with it recently is right. Meanwhile there's still plenty of mention of Drifters which leads me to believe it's quite possibly just being re-uploaded or it glitched out.
And I wouldn't worry about them getting rid of all their MA titles; I mean, that's a phenomenally bad business decision for an anime company with their standing to do. Unless Drifters has some extremely graphic content nobody has mentioned, I doubt that's the reason it's gone. And, I mean, it's still on Hulu...

Yeah, I love that series, I remember when I first saw it as a kid. Still, I wish they could have dubbed the episodes with the Garuru Platoon. I would have loved to see what Giroro’s brother would be like in the dub.

Keep in mind Funimation holds international regions outside North America/UK-IE, including Latin America and Spain. In Spain, the anime was distributed by Selecta Vision under a Funimation license.

In regards to the update: Huh, so is it normal for digital rights to expire but the blu-ray to still be made available? And are they gonna renew the digital rights at some point?

So long as they have blu-rays that have already been printed and packaged, they can still sell them until they run out. At that point the series will go out-of-print until if/when somebody else license rescues it.

Funimation's streaming rights to Tenchi Muyo GXP expired recently but they still have the home video rights. Although I enjoyed Drifters at the time, I'm not surprised Funimation let the license go. The show got some hype early on being from the creator of Hellsing but people didn't keep up with it for whatever reason. I remember a second season was announced shortly after it aired but the studio never did anything with the property after that so I don't think it did that well in Japan either. At least the manga is still available from Dark Horse. I feel like Drifters might have done better if it had been aired on Toonami when it first came out. I wonder if Crunchyroll can rescue license Drifters? Or maybe Sentai will pick it up.

At least Funi is decent enough to sometimes have a message that says something like "Better start watching [title name] now because that title's video pages are leaving on this date".
