if the story was so bad why did they even release it?

and also if the story is seems like its skipping so much how could it have done well in japan?

I think it's fine and not really skippy at all, but what do I know? I'm a contsantly sleepy 13-year-old.... and I think almost anything is good, even crap no one else can tolerate. It's a gift, i guess.

Because they're mermaids, the bubbles make them drunk.

It's really not as bad as the reviewer makes it out to be. In fact, I think the reviewer seems to have missed quite a few story elements that I thought were pretty clearly explained. Lucia is onland because years ago she rescued Kaito from drowning and the two fell in love with each other. Now Kaito is starting to have feelings for Lucia, but he doesn't realize that the human girl he knows now and the mermaid who saved him are in fact the same person. This wasn't really covered much in Vol. 2, but it was covered in the "previously in..." box on the first page. I assume this reviewer only read Vol. 2, but so did I and I had no trouble following this part of the plot.

As to why the girls are continuing on their quest after Lucia already has her pendant, it's part of the whole underlying storyline that the 3 girls have to reunite with the other 4 mermaid princesses in order to give their goddess enough power to win the undersea war.

Personally, I enjoyed this book well enough for what it is. There are certainly better magical girl books out there, but this had enough interesting twists to keep my attention....I personally think the idea of splitting the undersea oceans into 7 kingdoms with 7 princesses and all that is kind of a cool, fairy tale-ish concept, and the art suits this type of story well. I'm not saying the book is amazing--I'd probably give it a solid C or a C+ in terms of story instead of a D--but for fans of the magical girl genre, I think it's interesting enough to take a look at.

I agree with the above poster. It's fluffy fun and doesn't require much brainwork, it's not going to win any Hugos or whatever but it IS fun for lazy afternoon when you don't want to read something overly taxing. I actually prefer it to Tokyo Mew Mew myself, as it think it has much better pacing than that series (or at least the manga version of Tokyo Mew Mew). Yes it's not as engrossing as Sailor Moon, or even the Wedding Peach manga but it's a lot of fun and as the reviewer said it has really pretty art.

One thing though jgreen about your review:

Also, while the female characters get the star treatment here, the men don’t come off nearly as well: there are three male characters, and all three look identical, right down to their haircuts. Gackto and Kaito engage in a knockdown, drag-out fight, and it becomes nearly impossible to tell which one is which.

Spoiler tagging even though this is just a guess but: spoiler[I think that this is a plot point, I've not read a lot of MPPP sites for want of avoiding spoilers but it wouldn't surprise me if the Kaito and Gackto are the same guy, twins, or fragments of the same conciousness or something.]

HUH. An interesting idea, but I dunno...spoiler[I still think they should look more different, even if they are the same guy. It just strikes me as artistic laziness.]

You mean they aren't? Seriously, I've only read the first volume, and I thought they WERE the same guy.

Well, I've only read the second volume, but there it isn't implied anywhere, other than the fact that they look the same, right down to the haircut.
