The recent "making of" special streamed by Crunchyroll shows the manga's last 6 volumes on the staffers' desks, so maybe they'll just announce a final cours for the anime, whether they call it season 5 or just the second half of season 4.

Hoho, could this be a sequel series, or maybe some spinoff? I believe it's gonna be some sort of spin-off, having a sequel doesn't seem right. I haven't completed the manga yet but I know it ends with an epilogue, maybe with a time skip. It would be weird to have a sequel take place after the time skip because what are they going to write about? Didn't they all graduate from the cooking school?
Hopefully it's some good news because the manga got really rough and started going downhill during the last arc form what I've heard. It might not make up for what happened, but I hope this announcement is something good for us fans of the series.

Hold up, season 4 is currently at episode 9 or 10 and it's already on the final matchup with Souma's gang and Central. Season 4 is also listed for 25 episodes so I thought that's enough to fully animate the rest of the manga.

There's a hint that the season will be a split cour (official site is only listing a Bluray box for episodes 1 to 12). So I'm guessing that important announcement will be the second half of season 4.

If this is a sequel then it makes the final arc of the manga weird.
The arc was so rushed it feels like either the mangeka ran out of ideas & wanted to end it quickly or the higher ups wanted it gone as fast as possible.

The announcement is that the anime will completely change the final arc so that it is more bearable than the garbage that was the BLUES arc of Food wars

Shiit if that’s the case I hope the author of the manga is also involved in the rewriting process. That way it can be considered partly canon. I wonder how the last arc did so bad. Did the author run out of ideas but just kept pushing it until it got axed? Or was the manga just doing poorly in Shōnen jump for the last few arcs and Jump told the author to end it quickly?

There a couple of reason for SnS downfall:
1. Series escalation done poorly: The series jump from semi-realistic cooking to super power cooking with chainsaw and grenade. It jump over the shark and to the moon.
2. Introduction of the new antagonist, who arguably the worse character ever but keep getting shove down the readers mouth. The author stated that he created this character to made Souma and Erika grow closer but what he actually do is reverse all of Erika character development while side line all the other characters until only Erika, SOuma and maybe Megumi remain in the picture. And at the end Souma and Erika don't even get together, so it was pointless anyway.
3. One of the 3 authors leave to get birth, she also is the cooking expert so the cooking part of this cooking manga get less and less screentime.
