Cool, I'm know he'll do great with this! I hope he washes it out thoroughly first!

Wouldn't be the first time he took over for Vic.

I want to hear him as Edward Elric. I haven't watched anything but the first few episodes of either versions of FMA so PRETTY PLEASE! Someone make this happen!

And Broly is already improved despite it just being Johnny screaming his lungs out.

Eh, kind of a sad situation but I hope Johnny does a good job. I will always hear him as Lelouch though.

To be honest, back in the days of Trigun I always thought he would have made a hell of a Son Goku.

Some English Broly gameplay footage for those who don't have the game, but as AiddonValentine said, it doesn't seem like he got any dialogue, just grunts and screams:

I think the DBS Broly movie is the only role I've ever heard Vic in, since I've seen about 98% subbed anime (I still watch dubs occasionally). All else I've seen of DB is about 40 DBZ episodes on Toonami in 2000, but I found Broly and Cheelai so likeable that I've seen the movie three times and bought the green BD (haven't watched it subbed yet). Johnny Yong Bosch is a familiar name but I'm not familiar with his work, I'll be interested to hear his version of Broly's calm voice.
Re: the idea of redubbing Edward Elric, or Broly in any already released anime, that's pretty definitely not going to happen. Here are some quality posts from this recent FMAB thread:

There's no residuals. Funimation isn't union, especially for in-house dubs. They paid the actors once to record it and that's it. He hasn't earned a cent for playing Elric since Sacred Star of Milos. (Unless there was a dubbed OVA or something in the interim). So there's no point rerecording the dub, it doesn't matter how much it's shown or what services it's on, he's not getting anything out of it.
I don't think residuals are a thing in general for anime dubs, possibly due to how dub track rights actually work. Watching a dub or buying it on blu-ray or whatever means that Funimation might hire the specific actors again, but it doesn't actually affect how much the actors earn. |
Millennial Anime Fan wrote: | I see some people asking whether or not Fullmetal Achemist: Brotherhood would be re dubbed, because of Vic Mignogna. I don't think Funimation or Aniplex of America would be willing to hire another voice actor to essentially be the "new Edward Elric". From what I've read anime dubbing is very expensive and time consuming for both the voice actor and the studio. You can still hear Scott Freeman as Issei in the earlier seasons of High School DxD but in later seasons was replaced by Josh Grelle due to Scott Freeman being charged with possession of child porn in 2015. |
Cardcaptor Takato wrote: | I think the big factor preventing FMAB from being redubbed is that there's no real money to be gained from doing so. FMAB already has made as much money as it's going to from anime fandom as most everyone in the fandom has seen it by now and most everyone who wants to own a copy already has one by now. If there was a profit to be gained from doing a new dub, they probably would if only to milk the series more, but as of now it would be more costly to redub it than to not. To be honest, I think the Japanese version is vastly under-rated and Romi Park deserves more praise. |
AutoOps007 wrote: | They're not gonna redub anyone, even if they were allowed to. It would just be a waste of money. No one's gonna want to buy a re-dub with Ed recast. If we were to ever get a new movie, ova or even series, they will of course recast him, cause at that point it's that or nothing, but a new dub with a recast Ed won't do well when the old dub already exists. |

It's almost certainly intentional both Sabo and Broly went to JYB given they're friends and JYB even talked about how he and Vic have been talking about it behind the scenes all this time.

I feel like that probably the best choice for a character who screams a lot. He does do screams pretty well. He's also in practically everything so why not also DBZ.
Oddly him and Matt Mercer are like the two voice actors I can generally pick out instantly when trying to recongize voices because I've heard them so damn much.

I like that JYB actually spoke to Vic about this civilly. They're not just ignoring Vic, demonizing him, or sweeping him under the rug. They acknowledge that his time is over, but still treat him with respect for his role in the industry. Whether you think he deserves it or not, I think it speaks volumes of Johnny.

If we're talking about VA's that can fill the roles Vic once had, I think Christopher Llewyn Ramirez would be a perfect substitute. When I first heard the dub for "Radiant" I legitimately thought Vic was Seth, so imagine to my surprise when I saw newcomer Christopher Llewyn Ramirez in the credits. I bet Christopher could EASILY provide the voice of Edward Elric as well as Vic's other roles. Can't imagine him screaming his lungs out as Broly though.

Even this far into Radiant, I'm still noticing just how similar those voices are.
I hadn't really given any thought to who would play Broly going forward, but I can't complain about picking Bosch.

I'm curious if Johnny will also be OG!Broly moving forward if he ever appears in new games.

I have my doubts about seeing OG Broly in a game again seeing how Super Broly was so well received, unless we have a game that explores alternate timelines or something (IE the movies and GT)
