Been looking forward to Dark Horse bringing over Endo's short stories ever since checking out scans of them after having read their Eden: It's an Endless World! adaption (one of their presentation in terms of quality releases along with Blade of the Immortal, in my opinion). January cannot come fast enough -- I'll be waiting until Febuary, though, considering their "release schedule."
The Akira Club book also looks interesting, and I'll definitely being checking that out since I find Otomo's realistic art and occasionally surrealistic presentations to be rather entrancing.

I thought Akira Club was supposed to come out 2 years ago. I'm also surprised they were able to sell it cheaper than the import. Paperback instead of hardcover, I presume?

I was hoping that they'd say something about Oh My Goddess, since DH has yet to meet a release date for the manga in 2006. But I suppose the point of the article was new plans and not the struggles getting current stuff out on time.

Surprisingly, no.
Quote: | In February, Dark Horse will publish Akira Club, a 256-page 8" x 11" color hardcover companion volume to the Akira volumes by Katsuhiro Otomo. The collection includes over 100 title-page illos created for the original serialization but not included with the manga volumes, alternate art, preliminary drawings, production sketches, posters, ads, and products, all with commentary by Otomo himself. |
Not that I'm complaining, of course.

Unless I'm mistaken, didn't Dark Horse release volumes two and twenty-two and twenty-three of Oh My Goddess! this past year?
Anyway, I'm not sure when the "Colors" book is supposed to be out, but the third volume is supposed to come out in November with volume twenty-four following soon thereafter.

Does anyone think that I should be concerned that they didn't mention MPD Psycho?
I hope its still on their 2007 agenda.
EDIT:
I see, its only talking about Spring 2007 and MPD Psycho is scheduled for Summer 2007.

The news about Akira Club is quite good. OMG! colors is supposed to come out this December now; I have no idea what's been up with their scedule this year. I mean they've always had problems, especially after the difficulties with their printer a few years back, but OMG! in particular seems to have suffered.
But I'm interested to see where this new willingness to licence short-story collections leads. While Endo's collections can be marketed to the Eden crowd (even if some of the shorts aren't action/violence-oriented), Ohikkoshi is a 180-degree turn from Blade of the Immortal. I think it was a very smart decision on their part since BotI has a strong fanbase and Ohikkoshi is exellent enough to appeal to a wide audience, but I wonder if they'll be willing to branch out more in the future. The company has been focusing on horror manga and of corse Carl Horn's Manly manga for a while now, but I'd love to see them take some more chances on newer artists/formats.

I'm assuming Carl's really busy. Or he's on vacation. Either way, good for him.

Personally I was hoping that they would announce the release date for Hellsing Vol. 8 for the states. Does anyone know when its going to be released?

Yes, they were releases... several months late. Volume 3 and 24 should have been released already, but they are nowhere to be seen. Trigun Maximum has been having some issues with meeting the release date as well.

You could've just stated what you REALLY want and say that you hope that Dark Horse goes into Shogakukan territorry, namely of the Ikki and Big Comic Spirits variety (not that I have anything against that at all).

Volume eight was just released in Japan in late July. I can only expect volume eight to be put over here in North America sometime next spring or summer at the latest.

I would chalk it up to Dark Horse catching up to the Japanese releases, but the thing is that there are twelve volumes of Trigun Maximum out over there and obviously DH caught up with the releases of Hellsing without any worry. Though volume nine has seen a release since the release date issues started to occur, so that series isn't in as much troubled waters as Oh My Goddess! is.

That, and catching up to the Japanese release has nothing to do with Dark Horse actually meeting the street dates they put out.

Well that's impossible to begin with since they are Shogakukan's mags. And while your right about what I would like (do I know you from somewhere ), I know at this point they're not ready to take such a big step away from what they're known for, even if Ohikkoshi does sell well. I just want some new stuff to come out rather than continually digging through Koike's lesser titles, or re-releasing every Shirow manga (they're starting to go in that direction anyways, so this is only a minor gripe).

Which is essentially what I was alluding to... I think...
But yeah, unlike Viz or Tokyopop (well, mostly Viz), Dark Horse doesn't care whether or not they catch up to the releases in Japan or not.

So, for example, we basically rely on Del Rey for Homunculus?

Naw, I'm just your atypical teenage male manga and anime fan who has both an interest and love for mature storytelling in each respective mediums.
Plus, I skimmed over your "My Manga" list earlier today, and with my still limited knowledge of what manga came from what, I put two and two together and came up with your preferences.

That'll easily draw in the Blade of the Immortal/Samura crowd (which includes me since I've already pre-ordered from Amazon), though I'm a bit skeptical if the sales would come from any other source, sadly.

I think Dark Horse in general seems to focus on yakuze-esque oriented seinen titles and going through to release their older series again (yet not an uncensored Narutaru, which I wonder if that'll ever come into existence). By any luck it is just a phase that they're going through. It seems as though they are aware that certain audiences are going to give their support to certain areas/manga-ka, as evidenced with their releases from Samura and Endo, so right now we can only sit back and hope.
Edit: Typos, those annoying little buggers.
