In all fairness, there was a studio that was ready to do Blue Sky, but they had other stuff on their plate.

Let me guess? It was a harem and/or moe show?

No, it most likely won't.
Fist of The North Star never did too well over here. Which is sad, really, as it's a great series. It inspired a while generation of manga-ka (Including Naruto creator Masashi Kishimoto and his younger twin brother Seishi), and is even the favorite anime of popular japanese rocker Gackt.
I remember hearing about the anime, but I also remember hearing that it never got started. Raijin Comics was supposed to have released a DVD with a special pre-subscription that was supposed to have the first episode of Blue Sky on it, aswell as the first episode of the Baki anime. I'm not sure if that ever got released or not. I was actively searching for it a few years ago, but nothing ever came up on it.
So, it seems the Blue Sky anime is finally seeing the light of day. It's about time, too. I've only been waiting four years for it.

Raoh: Fist of the Blue Sky has better art, and is a prequel, so it has a better chance of getting licensed and doing better than the 80's show. As for Raijin, they had to settle for an episode of the New Fist OVA which eventually got picked up by ADV. Dunno why the Baki tv thing didn't happen, though. Maybe FUNimation picked it up by then.

No, this was back in 2002, long before FUNimation got Baki. Also, it couldn't have been the new Hokuto OVA, that wasn't until 2003.
I've done a bit of research and talked to a friend who did presubscribe, he said they never delivered on the screener dvd thing, and instead gave away posters and action figures.
Gatsu: Yes, while its true that it is a prequal, I still don't really see it getting liscensed and being aired on television. If anything, modern day anime will just allow it to be more graphic. Compare the new Hokuto ova to the older television episodes. The TV episodes showed exploding heads, however, it didn't show it explicitly. The new OVA shows it so accuratly, that you can see brain matter flying around and skulls being left to rot.
Don't get me wrong, though. I would LOVE more than anything to see this come to America and do well. I'm just not seeting it logically happen unless the liscensor's company's owner, or whoever runs it, is a huge fan of the show.

Well they were hoping to get the Blue Sky anime off the ground in 2002, but obviously, it didn't happen until now, and the next best thing was the OVA series. But yeah, I'm guessing the screener thing didn't happen, either, because ADV had licensed the OVA. Also, the reason the tv series was less violent than the OVA was because it was shown during hours when kids were watching it. If you see the original movie, it's as bloody as what's currently available. Anyway, the Blue Sky manga only has explicit violence in key scenes, and is surprisingly restrained. It might sell here to people bored with the over-the-top action in today's anime.

I'm sure it will end up in the US eventually (if it actually gets made this time). New Fist of the North Star was licensed here, after all.
The age of the old Hokuto no Ken TV series (and the sheer crumminess and filler episodes of the Shin story arc) is its main enemy.

I found the manga to be terrific, I only wish Raijin did better than it had, they could've just went the graphic novel route and stayed there.

Raijin was a great company with a great idea. They were the first to try and bring over monthly (or was it weekly?) Manga magazines (like shonen jump is doing now). And had a lot more titles for an older audience. Fist of the Blue Sky, Grappler Baki, ect.
I miss them a bunch. Especially since not all of Fist of the Blue sky manga was released here.
