Oppliger stated that the entire North American DVD market (not just the anime market) has been decreasing in sales for about a year and a half. Field said that it is a catch-22 that the market is hurt by an oversaturation of products, yet the only way for companies to really make money is to re-release titles at a lower price later on.

I think part of the problem with the saturation is that companies chose not to emphasize consumer awareness of the various anime and manga they licensed, and assumed all of it would sell. If they
improve their marketing, so I can tell one harem, angsty pretty- boy hero, or schoolgirl make-over title from another, the companies won't have to suffer the consequences by discounting
their series within a year.
