I’m a bit disappointed at how they rushed the first light novel. Some of the character designs are a bit bland... + I enjoyed the first episode of the VS Imaginator arc. It looks like there will be better pacing (well I hope that is the case) Music is good. I think I’ll buy the OST when it’s released Since it’s 18 episodes, I assume the first 6 light novels will be adapted. I’m thinking 3 episodes for each light novel, however, I hope they spend a bit more time on the VS Imaginator arc as it’s my favourite and I don’t want it to be rushed

My recollection from watching it is that the series twenty years ago was an anime original plot occuring some time after the first novel, not an adaptation of later novels. This show originally got billed (possibly due to translation confusion or some other misunderstanding) as an adaptation of the first novel alone, so I was confused to see the first novel wrapped up in episode three. As you say, they really packed things in at an impressive pace. The way that the novel is told with different POVs presented from start to finish, thus overlapping in time and even going backwards when we switch POV characters was directly brought to the anime. Makes a fairly standard plot more interesting. |

As John Thacker notes, Boogiepop Phantom is anime original, by and large, and consists of telling stories that occur simultaneously with, I think, the events of the first novel (though it alludes to the flash of light when Echoes vanishes in its opening seconds).
There was also a live action film for the first novel. I think the most noteworthy aspect of that film was its soundtrack by Yuki Kajiura. This soundtrack is lighter, piano-centric, with less synthesizer and is more jazzy than typical Kajiura choral bombast. Another thing that a novel can do that's a little hard in anime is it can force you to go back to earlier pages and re-read them. I won't be surprised if Boogiepop is one of those series that gives its biggest payoff upon a second or third viewing. I happen to like series like that very much, at least when there's enough in the first viewing to whet your appetite for more, |

I typically like to watch things by chronological production order (for all its ups and downs), but it sounds like I could watch this and the previous 2000 show in either order then...?

Fantastic first three episodes. I don’t know if I liked the fourth episode as much - not as big a fan of the Imaginator thus far. But I’m super familiar with the Manticore story, owning the manga version, so that may be part of it. Hindsight and more viewpoints may make a difference.
The opening is hands down my favorite that I’ve seen this season and have always loved the concept so I am all in for this show. It is SO in my wheelhouse. |

Manticore, Nagi Kirima, and to a lesser extent, Echoes, are present in Boogiepop Phantom but I haven't read the novels, so I didn't know the other stuff was unique to the anime.That's kinda unfortunate since I was hoping to see a return of the spoiler[Poom Poom].

I watched Boogiepop Phantom when it premiered on TechTv a million years ago and I've also read the first 2 novels I believe. I liked Phantom and enjoyed the novels and even though I can't remember the nitty gritty I was very excited for this series. I remember Phantom being a clusterf*ck so I am not too put off by the non linear-ness of the narrative.
I vaguely remember some of the characters, some more than others. Overall I am enjoying the series so far. |

It's been a decade or more since I read and reviewed the source novels for this, but IIRC the anime version hasn't added anything yet that wasn't in the novels. I was surprised that the first novel was fully covered in only three episodes - I would have expected four - but it worked well enough so whatever.
And yes, this is definitely not a franchise you cannot watch casually. When I wrote a pre-ANN review for Phantom, I made a score card that was more than half a page long of all the significant characters and how they were related (see here if you're interested) and I always marveled at how much the series made you think about what was going on. Doesn't look like this adaptation of the original novels is going to be any different. I also fully agree that this is one of those series where rewatches help give a much richer understanding of what's going on since you can go into earlier episodes knowing where they're heading and thus why details which seemed innocuous at first actually weren't. I would actually say that seeing the first three episodes of this series before the 2000 series works better and makes it less confusing. The 2000 anime was largely made for people who were already fans of the books. The 2000 anime takes place shortly after the first book (so eps 1-3 here), but from what I understand could be watched equally well at any point thereafter. It's kind of like the Monogatari series and Kizumonogatari. Kizu was the second book in publication order (first in internal chronological order, but no one recommends that) nut done much later as an anime. So chronological production order has a different meaning depending on whether you're thinking light novels or anime. |

What ? The production company does care a heck of a lot actually, so much so that the slight artistic character differences that annoyed the novel writer got redone. |

You are correct. Boogiepop Phantom is a standalone anime original story. Will add that watching Boogiepop Phantom at this point, will only increase a viewer's confusion over what's going on with Boogiepop and Others. --------------------------------- Good news though is Boogiepop Dawn contains the origin story. |

Manticore Phantom,Poom Poom and Boogiepop Phantom,along with others,are original characters created for Boogiepop Phantom. Boogiepop Phatoms takes place in an alternate reality/universe which was created by Echoes' electromagnetic pulse(beam of light Ep 3). |

Wait, where is it specified that Phantom is an alternate reality? I know it all spins off the beam of light, but I was always under the impression that it was in the same continuity. |

Echoes ascension/passing created an altered reality where the past and present were made one within the area of the two high schools.The pulse(beam of light) drew upon the memories of the living,the dying and the dead within that area. And those memories created/formed anime original characters. What I'm suggesting is as Phantom's use of a anime original story,along & characters-It's just not a good place to start learning about Boogiepop's universe. Short list of spots for info..
