This reminds me when Adult Swim showed Kill La Kill fanart by accident and not credit the artist whatsoever when they mentioned it again the next week.

I'm not sure who made the messup, but I am inclined to believe that Netflix really would only use art provided by the publisher to avoid exactly this kind of situation. What actually happened, I have no clue, but it's hard to imagine someone spending the time to google image search something knowing that it would almost certainly result in a legal issue.

Honestly, I can't help but be skeptical of this until more people have verified they have seen this on Netflix on their own profile, as well.

Why? You think ANN is making stuff up? |

Netflix is using fan art, they should credit the artist if they want to continue using it.

Credit them? More like pay them significant royalties. This is Netflix, a for profit streaming service valued at a gazillion dollars, not some random dude reposting for free on twitter. |

I don't think there's any reason to be skeptical if Netflix is responding like it indeed exists and ANN is doing a story on it. This also wouldn't be their first issue with anime cover art... |

Coming from the other side of things...I spent 14 years as an admin on a board which began life as a fansite for LOST and then morphed into a community posting board with a mass-media focus as that show was winding down.
We had some pretty strict rules about grabbing content, especially images, from off the net. Nothing that was going to get us sued, first off. So we made sure our banners were all either "public use" or covered by "Fair Use" or were things which were made in-house by our members. This is not that hard to do if you are careful, and actually give a rat's south end about the procedure. If Netflix is having a repeated issue with this then my guess is that they are either not properly instructing the graphic design staff, the ones who go and select the actual imagery, on what is allowed and what isn't, or they just don't care to. |

This wouldn't be the first time. Netflix used fan art from a well known Sonic fan artist before as their Sonic Underground banner. Honestly, makes me wonder what kind of processes, or lack thereof, they take to pick out the promotional images they use.

Or the guy on Twitter is making it up for attention or something. |

This isn't the first time Netflix has done this, though. |

On the other hand Aniplex just has to say the art was made without permission of a character they own the rights to so they can allow Netflix to use it however they want without compensation or credit.
I don't see how if the artist is saying it's their work and Netflix has confirmed the graphic is real. However, I can't find that image being used myself checking Netflix. Emerje |

Yeah, like they say in the article, the thumbnails you see for shows vary based on one's viewing habits (Here's a video on that) so you won't necessarily see that particular one. |

I hope they do something to compensate the artist because I know what it feels like to be ripped off
Years ago I did a 3D render of the TARDIS from Doctor Who. That render is now on 90% of merchandise!! I can tell when it's mine because of an error in the render. In the bottom left corner of the front door there are two lines that repeat because of bad texture mapping. One inside the knock-out panel and on outside. Whenever I see this error on a product I get royally P-O'd. So I REALLY hope the artist gets something. Even just giving credit sometimes is fine. |
