Sounds like they have gotten rid of Kaban, and just are doing a similar (reboot?) story from the first season.

I'll still watch it to see where they are going, but a little disappointed that this isn't a sequel.

But given what we learn about Kaban in the last episodes, how can they have another human show up?
There aren't several dozen of them just lying scattered around the park.

^^Ditto. I may watch an episode or two but not high on my "watch list".

After reading this guy's interviews, I am actually believing that this series has a chance. Of course, I am still skeptical about this. As long as the human child/new protagonist is not the lucky male protagonist that you would see in an idol, isekai, or harem anime, then I am cool with it. The original never had him after all.

Was there a time where everyone was thinking that season 2 would totally and completely everything good about season 1 and would be a radically different show? Like what was that based off of?

The staff didn't exactly inspire much confidence after that whole plagiarism debacle.

Well, they did get rid of the original staff didn't they. Sounded like the company wanted to go in a different direction. That is why we are getting a reboot, instead of a sequel.
