"Support animators works"

Until the machine learning gets so good that it can replace animators completely. It sucks, but that's probably the future of anime in the coming decade.

No wonder FLCL Progressive looked like such an insult to the original...

Sigh... Smoother frame rate =/= Good or Expressive animation, in my opinion.

Just because computer can make smoother inbetween frames, it doesn't mean that movement will always look good. Now JP animator might have to do extra work of tweaking the timing (frame rate and duration) by discarding unwanted AI-generated inbetween frames or draw extra key frame(s) to keep the illusion and expression they want to maintain.

In 2D animation, smoother frame rate/too much inbetween frames in long time duration creates the perception of slowed down movement as unintended consequence. Exaggerated movements expressed in animation has to be careful with timing or it ruins the illusion for being overtly artificial or unnatural. Master animators understand the importance of timing in the cut they create and they keep tweaking timing to maintain the illusion til the last minute. (AKA frame modulation)

Great thing about enjoying Japanese animation in varying frame rate is that viewers get pleasure by subconsciously interacting with sequence of images which have some room to fill the blanks to finish the illusion of movement. That interaction is difficult with Western feature 2D animations championing with smooth frame rate with no room to fill in. I hope the future 2D Japanese animation projects don't discard in favor of technical advancement.

There is time and place for smoother frame rate, but it's not applicable to all sequences.
