Too bad I never heard of them. This is probably the reason - lack of advertisement.

I've heard of it. I just never check the site out. I'm sorry for those who are members and staff of Animeforest.

I used Anime Forest a couple of times. It was pretty convenient to be able to rent out DVDs on an individual basis from them, rather than having to commit to a subscription. They did have quite a lot of competition though, from rental sites like the Anime Nation one and Anime Takeout (not to mention Netflix, which has vastly improved its anime selection since Anime Forest opened for business.)

Well if you never heard of them, it's because you were probably never interested in renting anime online in the first place. They're one of the few anime exclusive rental site.

That's the EXACT reason why I don't use anime-only sites. I like my anime, but I also like to rent other movies besides JUST anime. (I use Netflix) They have most animes and when I'm feeling bored, I get a disk of Family Guy or South Park.
Hey, maybe Netflix or Blockbuster online is hiring.

That's one less competitor for AnimeNation's RentAnime.com to worry about.

Kinda sad. I rented about 20 dvd's from them over the years. The best thing about AnimeForest was they had just about everything. They had every single Ranma 1/2 dvd. Every season, movie, and ova. No other dvd rental site can make that claim. The reason I stopped using them was Netflix has nearly as good a selection and their shipping facility is only a few miles away. Animeforest ships out of CA, while I live in NY. I've tried other anime exclusive sites like rentanime and they aren't very good. Crappy selection being my biggest complaint. I liked knowing that Animeforest was there if I happened to need them. Like right now, Netflix isn't carrying Genshiken Vol. 2 for some insane reason. If Animeforest were still in business, I could rent it from them for $4. $4 for one rental isn't dirt cheap, but I'm not locked into a subscription at $20 either. It's a dam shame Animeforest is gone.

Eh. I'm not missing it. Netflix has WAY a better service, price, and turnaround time.
I've never had a problem finding any of the anime I was looking for, and it's even better for non-anime DVDs (Movies, TV).
So basically, I'm glad these guys at Anime Forest were doing their damndest to let people rent anime, but it's hard to compete with big business these days.
And to all the people who miss Anime Forest......try Netflix...

Although Rent Anime does try to make that claim by saying they have the biggest selection possible, or something like that.

Personally, I haven't rented online yet because my local rental store has the largest collection of anime in my state. Unfortunately, I'll be moving cities soon (oddly enough, to a larger one that might not have as much anime for rent), so I'm going to be testing the online rental waters, first with Netflix so I can rent other movies, and if I don't like their anime selection (which in all fairness probably will be most of what I rent) then give Rent Anime a try.

By being tied to a big online store, RentAnime has a big advantage over companies that are primarily rental only. So I don't doubt their claim.
It sucks that Anime Forest went under, I certainly hope that rentanime.com isn't in danger of a similar fate.

Funny how they now carry vol. 2, but no longer have vol. 3. guess it's not there fault people don't want to return the dvd's they rent. especially, since you can claim it got lost in the mail and keep it for free. They only bill you if it happens a few times in a short period.

I've used them alot when I started renting online. Then I moved to Greencine. The 4$/dvd really made a big hole in your pocket if u didn't watch it. So I decided to go for a 30$/month subscription for 5 dvds at a time. So I rented around 25 dvd's/month insted of paying 100$ at 4$/dvd. If they had a subscription service at the time, I might have sticked with them.
