Is there much of an intersection between the regular attendees of NYCC and Anime Expo, to whom this partnership would appeal? Surely their respective locations entail that they cater to audiences that are all but disjoint.

There's plenty of anime fans at NYCC every year. Mostly annoyed because I was going to go to NYCC for sunday and now I'll have to pay extra for the anime content.

I am so angry about this. I already got NYCC tickets for the 3 days I can attend in the presale a month ago. They haven't released the schedule yet, and they haven't released the schedule, or even the guest list, for this event yet. They are essentially hosting two related events at the exact same time in the same city at different locations and charging fans who are interested in both--but have no way of determining if they'd prefer one or the other--a separate ticket fee ($5 discount per day, to be in another location than the main event you already paid over $50/day for, joy!). Anyone who's been to comic con can tell you how hard it is to schedule a day where you get to attend the panels you are most interested in, especially since NYCC already makes con goers walk a few blocks to certain events. Almost all the most popular panels have long wait times, and you have to factor in traveling time and foot traffic between events, especially if you are checking out the too crowded main show floor for freebies & deals.
I don't know who came up with this last minute, slapdash attempt to charge anime fans extra for their specific content and host it offsite to inconvenience them the most, but I do not like that person right now. |

I can already feel my non existent PTSD starting. This is going to be too much. Considering how big NYCC has been getting. I recall fans were upset awhile back about how NYCC (ReedPop, I don't know who's responsible) took over the last anime convention. That was NYAF. Now we have one back through CR which is NYC AnimeNYC.
I really don't know what to think of this because AnimeExpo is grounded in one state. Is this merger a test for future events? Is this a merger? Are they really going to hold two separate events? So if you attend both I would assume that you have to pay for NYCC tickets and Anime Expo tickets. Well, the Javits Center is pretty damn big. **Okay correction. Held the same day AT TWO DIFFERENT LOCATIONS??? WTF??? Why would anyone hold two of the biggest cons the same day??? |

I dont know about this .NYC is already going to have ( liberty city anime con and crunchy rolls nyc anime con) . The whole reason why it was even done in the first placewas to seperate themselves from nycc.since when nyaf was integrated in nycc ,they basically killed it off.

Well, that's the way it was perceived. In fact here's an article that states exactly what "I" had heard in passing. NYCC merges NYAF Because when this happened I'd hear people were pissed off. The East Coast doesn't have many anime dedicated cons. BAAF (Big Apple Anime Fest) was one of the last one's in NYC before 911. It never came back after 911 because when the disaster happened they were going to have one. It didn't happen it was killed off. Then years later we got NYAF. For some reason I think I used to see ReedPop on them. Which gave me the impression that they were in charge. Once NYAF died off and NYCC took it's place, that's when I saw ReedPop's name again. This brought on the assumption that they merged with NYCC. Then I started hearing the complaints from fans on why they had to merge the two. The idea of merging NYAF and NYCC would be a case of the larger con swallowing a smaller con. Which is exactly what happened. What I didn't know is that ReedPop was always part of NYCC and it was the other way around. So yeah, in your words you could say, NYAF was killed off. To everyone else it was by a bigger entity. This is why now with AnimeNYC I've heard people state in passing (I attended last year's AnimeNYC) that they were pleased that they could attend an "ANIME ONLY" convention without the madness that NYCC brings. Sure there is crossover but NYCC is just too big of a thing. |

The comments in this thread are interesting.
AnimeNYC is not "through CR." It's got nothing to do with CR besides as a partner. Leftfield Media is basically reviving NYAF because it is the same person(s) who ran both that and AnimeNYC. (Leftfield also runs CRX, and a bunch of other stuff, but there you go.) Of course the brand NYAF is owned by NYCC, so this is why we have a news item saying Brand_A x Brand_B at NYCC. NYAF is still a memorable brand, I mean how many 10000+ cons became a ghetto in another con? LOL. [As an aside, as someone who's been to a bunch of anime cons in the Northeast US, I think there are plenty of cons in the region. I will forever remember BAAF 2001 because that photo op with Giuliani was so iconic. But it basically ended as the guys at CPM stopped with the extra credit work. No, 9/11 did not kill it exactly. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Big_Apple_Anime_Fest ] I agree with Agent355 above. This move screws over a lot of people who like the main NYCC programming and the anime stuff, while it is trying to court a more specific crowd who don't go to NYCC anymore (myself included). I guess we'll see how it turns out, but how can they escape that "anime ghetto" characterization by doing it like this? Pier 94 is a literal mile away from Javits. They will need a dedicated shuttle bus or something |

This explains quite a bit. I think I might have seen that name Lettfield. So they're going to try and revive NYAF? But then what will happened to AnimeNYC. Will NYC be getting 2 anime cons? But I wonder what this move with NYCC and Anime Expo is supposed to accomplish. My co-workers have been talking and they think it's designed to kill or be complete competition with AnimeNYC. Maybe someone can give some insight on what might be happening here. Or any speculation. |

There's usually lots of anime stuff at Comiccon these days. Comics are actually probably the least represented thing there these days. TV, Movies, anime, video games... and a bit of comics. It's pretty much a generic fan convention these days. |

Well, the main thing is AnimeNYC's fanbase knows where their loyalty lies. They didn't bad talk what's happening and that's it. The comments vary. But I'm still trying to figure out why this odd merger happened. Maybe I can get some insight from fans online to see what they think of this move. Even if it's speculation, what happens going forward will tell a different story.
