Since this thread's about MTV, I'll make the obligatory, "Hey, remember when they used to have music videos?" joke.

Yaoi and shojo are on MTV? OMFG SELL-OUTS THEY SUCK UNDERGROUND DOUJINSHI BETTER LOLOL! </end retard mode>

This is...kind of unexpected. And you know some people are going to watch it and just add "gay porn" to the list of incorrect anime perceptions, alongside "it's cartoon porn for perverts" and "all anime is for kids, like Pokemon." Hey, I guess I should be glad it's getting any mainstream exposure, but there are going to be idiots who will think those things.

Wow... I didn't realize yaoi is getting popular in US.. I live in TX and almost nobody (even Anime fans) are into those genres... this is quite an amazing change for American culture, which yaoi subculture will eventually flourish into the mainstream in few more years...

If you go to an anime con, you'll swear that half the fangirls there are yaoi fans- judging by the amount of yaoi fanart in the artists' alley and the screams whenever a group does a yaoi-themed skit for the costume masquerade. BTW, I'm one of those fan girls Anime smallmouth

Considering the recent releases of such BL-themed shows as Loveless and Sukisho in the US, and the the ever-increasing amount of BL manga offered here, I'd say this is pretty relevant topic for pop culture-oriented MTV to cover. The current national fascination with Brokeback Mountain was probably the final push for getting this aired, though.

Thats true, although I am on the side that doesn't like these shows. I really hope it doesn't give anime a bad name... again. I agree with Necros Antiquor, although I wouldn't go as far to call it "gay porn". I still don't understand America's obsession with homosexuality. I'm starting to think that being straight is wrong and will soon be frowned upon...

Please tell me your joking. I don't mean it as an anti-yaoi comment, just a really weird concept.

Oh, I don't care whether a person's a yaoi fan or not, I just appreciate that he/she is being understanding and not insisting that yaoi be banned just because they don't like it. Heck, I really dislike hentai, but I tolerate it because I want other people to tolerate my tastes. However, I don't think that America has an "obsession with homosexuality." Rather, it's a combination of recent gay-rights legal battles and the release of Brokeback that have suddenly pushed this topic to the forefront of American minds.

Edit: What happened to yaya-san's post? I swear it was in this thread, cause I quoted from it!

Just because homosexuality is becoming more America doesn't mean they have an obsession with it and that being straight will be outlawed. It's just like the Civil Rights movement. Just because blacks and other minorities succesfully got the Civil Rights laws passed, doesn't mean that being white became illegal or that there are any laws that are against whites.

Besides, Only about 3% of the population (At least the ones that are out of the closet) in america is gay so I really doubt that being straight will be illegal here.

I actually thought that, for something in the main culture about anime (well, more manga really), it was actually pretty good at looking at things. Yaoi was presented as only a part of manga as a whole, which was nice. I rather enjoyed it (when I eventually could see it...had to get a new version of Firefox and an extension >.<)

Is that the proper way to pronounce "manga"?

Actually, it already exists. Be Beautiful's releasing the samurai yaoi "Midaresomenishi" later this year. Gives a whole new meaning to "hot samurai action," don't it?

Then you haven't been to a con. Me and all of my friends LOVE yaoi. We role play/cosplay characters from Gravitation and such. Go to Akon in June (since that's the biggest con in texas) and you'll see many a yaoi fans (male and female)

Anyway I'm happy that yaoi is getting attention. Even though most of america is still conservative about this type of subject, at least we get some sort of media attention.
