See here? That myth that Japanese audiences didn't appreciate Cowboy Bebop and it was only ever popular in the West is once again debunked.

Also I can't help but wonder if there is going to be an important announcement at one of these...

I'm sorry, but if you're getting the bigwigs together for a "Sound Talk", and not having Yoko Kanno there, you're seriously dropping the ball. The Seatbelts' soundtrack was half of what made that show what it was.

Cowboy Bebop was reasonably popular in Japan when it aired in 1998. After all, it did spawn the Knockin' On Heavens Door feature film. That being said, it is absolutely true that Cowboy Bebop was nowhere near as popular in Japan as it was in the West. Even Shinichiro Watanable, the director himself, has commented on how his works are never as popular in Japan as in the West.

So, its not a myth exactly, but I think people misunderstood .

The most overrated anime of all time. This is my opinion.

Expect a North American theatre run within a year with the dub. Yes, we've all seen it on Adult Swim but this is HD theatre were talking about!

It is a shame that Keiko Nobumoto is not going to attend, as far as I know, she hasn't done anything since Space Dandy.

It sold about 10K, which is pretty decent. Dragonball GT sold around 30K per volume for comparison of a similarly timed anime.

It wasn't a bomb, but it sure as hell isn't God's Gift to Anime like western fans treat it where it runs for 10 years non stop on Adult Swim. To say Japan doesn't care about Bebop isn't a myth, it's pretty truthful. It was just another season anime that did fairly well and then people moved on and forgot about it. Hardly a cultural milestone like it is in America.

The Japanese Bebop BD box release sold about 17K copies, about 15 years after the original airing. That's better than a lot of series that were much bigger hits in Japan, and better than probably 95% of Japanese BD Box releases. So it may not be the be all and end all of anime in Japan, but obviously some sort of fanbase still exists.

No one said it was an incredible success in Japan, they just said that it did reasonably well. And that is because people kept saying that it failed in Japan, as in no-one watched and it sold badly. There is no reason to interoperate that as the exact opposite thing.

Does it really matter if Bebop was popular in Japan or not? I never understood why American fandom places the opinions of Japanese fans they'll never meet or talk to in such high authority.

Hey now, as a reluctant member of the American fandom, I place no value whatsoever on the opinions of the Japanese, and even think some of them are rubbish. But I get what you're saying, weaboos and all that.
