The wording is a bit too specific for me to rule out a similar system. My guess is that they have a new system plan that is basically the same thing with a different name. I think they want to start a new "banner"/name so that people can't annoy them with stuff like "I already bought this on virtual console on my Wii/WiiU/3DS!". Starting a whole new brand like "Digital Classics" would avoid people mistaking it for a unified system with the older consoles.

Makes me both happy to have an answer and sad to know that I probably won't be getting Xenoblade 1 on the Switch outside of a remaster.

Lemmi play a song for this kind of feeling:

How about a collection of these games, like you used to get before the 7th gen, well you got some during the 7th gen.

Nintendo currently operates the Virtual Console library for its Wii, Wii U, and 3DS systems.

Actually it's only the Revolution U and 3DS that the virtual console is still is still being operated. The on the Revolution is no longer being supported

I can see that being the case. I think we are going to have older games being available for the Switch digitally at some point. However, I don't see how this possibly change would keep people from telling Nintendo that they already own this game on another console (nor I see the reason behind that because if one already owns the game on another console and does not want to double, or triple did, then they just don't buy the game again. I guess what those people would be complaining about is the lack of new old games they could buy/want), as well as if they did go the the route of bringing the virtual console to the Switch it would still be consider apart of the system used before.

I do agree it's probably the branding that is the problem, since it sets all sorts of expectations they simply don't have to worry about without it. Further confused by how there's already some general retro brands going, like Hamster's arcade ACA and ACA Neo Geo lines.

I remember, over a decade ago by now, people declaring they would never call it the Wii and would keep saying Revolution. Including some guy on G4 or Tech TV or whatever that one cable channel was called. I figured they'd all long since given up by now. But...no. I am impressed. I think. Probably.

If nothing else, you have to admire the dedication.

Yeah, hopefully this just means a rebranding and such. Nintendo is foolish if they don't see the appeal of playing their classic games on handheld since the 3DS only had a limited selection of NES and SNES games.

If you can still have people still insisting Sega is going to drop the Dreamcast 2 anyday now why not.

Or Nintendo can just do what Steam's been letting people do for years and let them re download their digitally purchased software for no new costs on other systems as that's why this criticism exists.

I do not understand this. There are people who would buy the older games to play them. For whatever reason they can not get a hold of them(cost and rarity being the major reasons). So why wouldn't nintendo want to put out a virtual console and put those games out?Are they allergic to money?Or are they not to bright?

I still believe Nintendo will still distribute classic old game on the Switch Eshop but not under the title Virtual Console.
