I have very little hope and faith in 8-Bit but I do have a lot in Kazuki Akane... I'll give it 3 episodes

I feel like Akane's a guy people should talk about more than they do, given how interesting his resume is. Maybe because it's been so long since he directed a TV series -- Birdy: Decode ended in 2009 -- and arguably hasn't had a straight-up masterpiece since Escaflowne. This'll be his first time in the driver's seat since Akito the Exiled ended two years ago; worth keeping an eye on.

Oh man, I'm REALLY excited here! Akane is hands down my favorite director, and love to see something new from him, especially an original.

I agree. He has a very characteristic style, and nothing else is really like his stuff, but he doesn't seem to get recognized as an 'auteur'. I personally think it's because a lot of the meat of his stories is kind of hiding in plain sight; I don' t think he is deliberately cryptic or anything, but it's possible to miss it if you don't think to go looking for it. And often you wouldn't because the story has coherent surface-level to it that you might not feel the need to look beyond.

When he was last in the states at Otakon a couple of years ago I asked him a bit about this, and he said that he likes to work in anime because it's a medium that exists to the side of mainstream television or film, and won't be put under such scrutiny or have to appeal to a wide audience. Because the medium is kind of dismissed as stuff for kids or lame otaku, you have the freedom to go under the radar and tell the truth, even uncomforable truths or things that run orthogonal to what society at large likes or thinks is good, because that's not what people are going to be looking for.

The designs look nice. If this is a story about boys, this will be a nice change from mainly idols and action shows. I liked Battery even if it did have flaws. I hope this will be something like it.

I’m always down for more Akane since he’s the guy behind The Vision of Escaflowne. I am a bit mixed about his other work (looking at you, Noein), but other than that I’m looking forward to this one.

Looking at those drawings, what would be really good, is if instead of scanning the animation and then colouring it, if they painted them with watercolours then scanned them.

The work will center on the drama of children going through puberty.

Well that(anime) narrows it down, doesn't it. Very Happy

Joking aside, excited to hear this news. I am a huge Noein fan and anything else Mr. Akane creates will be at the top of my watch list. @Morgan B.: It is kind of a polarizing show, and you are better not to forget Escaflowne.
